Autobox problem

Hi guys, sorry for the long post but I’m having problem with the autobox, I have tried searching and tried a few things as a result of searching but to no avail. And a lot of the topics found do not show what the cure for these problems were.

This morning on the way to work the car started acting odd. Most notably I wasn’t able to get reverse gear. To engage reverse I have found that I have to let the car roll forward a little and then put it in reverse.

Also the car is very hesitant at times, mostly at low speed and occasionally when setting of from a standstill, and has stalled on a couple of occasions. The gearbox occasionally jumps between gears when the throttle is applied at low speed (this doesn’t tend to happen when I have the ‘box in first gear though, it only tends to happen in third.

The down shift is very harsh when it decides it wants to change. The up shift is smooth but again there is a delay in changing.

The things I have checked so far are;

  • Checked fluid level with car running etc. all seems fine and the fluid was changed around 6 months ago.

  • Removed the HKS top speed delimiter

  • Removed the Speedo converter which didn’t change anything

  • Checked for error codes and the only one that showed was the o/d light flashing 89 (or 98) what could this be?

  • Reset the ECU by removing the 2 EFI fuses for a minute.

  • The O2 sensor was replaced with a brand new one last weekend

  • New Battery today.

Any help on this would be great

Right, the drive home has found more problems.

All seemed to be going well as I set off from work, and it looked as if the problem was sorted, but a few miles down the road it started again, another 2 or 3 miles down the road without warning it stalled as I was going round a bend. I fought it to the side of the road and manged to coast on to the pavement.

After that it wouldn't start and if it did I had to hold the revs on otherwise it would cut out. In the end to get home I had to drive in 1st keeping the revs reasonably high so it wouldn't stall.

I have now removed the HKS De-limiter I had installed and the car now starts and idles but the gearbox issue remains. I have noticed also that there is a noise coming from the gearbox that sounds (thinks of a good way to describe it, but can't) like something electrical that keeps flicking off and on again.

Needless to say now it's not being driven untill it's fixed.

Thanks, this is the code 42 fix right? I'm not showing a code 42 on the diagnostic check, so should I do this fix as a matter of course?

To be honest I could not tell you. Mine is so intermittent that I did nothing about it. (probably happens once every 6 months!)

This was one of the solutions to the problem that was given to me so it may help, but other than that I don’t know much more….

If you do get to the bottom of the problem however I would be interested.. :)

Multiple wierd electronic problems could point to an earth fault. Are you getting any other symptoms like dimly glowing dash lights or a draining battery?

-Ian

My old battery before I changed it yesterday did on occasion lose it's charge, but I put this down to the battery itself being on it's last legs.

Right, still can't figure this one out. And to add to it the car now won't start at all. It turns over fine but will not kick in to life and when the ignition is on the speedo needle is jumping around alot. Also, just before it decided not to start the revs at idle were very low, probably around 400-500 rpm's.

I haven't checked the plugs and wether they are sparking or not, will do that tonight when I'm home from work (weather permitting) I can hear the fuel pump going and it is only 6 or so months old so I don't there's a problem with that.

Very occasionally the car will begin to fire up but every time I begin to hear it fire up for some reason (and without thinking about it) I let the key return to the ignition on position as if it has started!

I did the code 42 fix even though I wasn't showing a code 42 in the diagnostics check, but that has made no difference.

I have been searching the forum for all the problems individually and trying to find a cause that is common between them all, the only ones I can come up with is a bad earth somewhere (as Ian Says) or the Speed Sensor itself is kaput.

I don't know where to begin in checking for bad earths can any-one give me any pointers on where to look? and could the speed sensor itself be responsible for all this?

Jim, Appreciate this may not be totally helpful, but I had very similar symptoms on my Honda Blackbird, with the electronic speedo and rev counter jumping all over the place, would not run very well at low revs etc.

Problem was a bad generator which had shorted out, both at the alternator cols and at the voltage regulator, reducing the system voltage below 9 volts which appeared to be the minimum to run the electronics including the engine management system.

You say you have recently changed the battery and the old one presumably was shot?

Possibly you need to look at the alternator circuits along with the battery as it sounds like you are losing voltage somewhere while the engine is running.

Am I correct in assuming you have an auto box? if so, remember that the auto box contains a goodly number of electronically controlled circuits which also tie back to the engine management system so again, voltage drop at the electronics could be messing up the correct operation of these circuits.

Rgds

Don't know it this helps. Re: the mental rev counter, I had a recent problemwith my alt, basically it was on its last legs and only charging intermittently. When the battery had finally had enough and lost all charge (no charge whatsoever coming from the alt) the car died and as it did so the turbos were whistling all over the place and the rev counter was dancing the fandango!!

Might be worth a check of the alt? I didn't have any of the gear selection problems though.

It may be that the alt is not putting out enough charge to keep the engine running when its throwing a wobbler?

Like some have said, I also had weird problems with a BMW E30, like you say, it would stall unless you kept the revs up, would loose power, dash would go mad, electric sunroof wouldn't work, and it turned out to be the engine earth, I suspect this could be your problem, I'm not sure where it is located on the supra, but I would find it (or them) and remove, clean the mounting faces, and refit
