carl0s
How hard is it to get simple stuff like IPA nowadays? (Rhetorical question.. it's hard) I've been to a couple of pharmacies and the lady behind the counter goes looking on the shelf, then the chemist says no, can't do stuff like that any more, laws and what not. Can I use white spirits to clean dried-on Wine from a motherboard or do I need to make a trip to RS or Maplin or something?
carl0s
Ah, good old Maplin: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=28994&criteria=ipa&doy=20m11 Aerosol can is a P.I.T.A though.
JustGav
I know what you mean... When I was younger I used to be able to buy flowers of sulphur and saltpetre at the pharmacy. Went into a chemist about 1 year ago and I thought the lady was going to phone the police when I asked for it. That and pottasium permanganate which was always good fun with glycerin. carl0s
It's just no good is it. How can kids be expected to have any proper interests any more when they're not even allowed to experiment and learn things. I wonder if you can still buy Chemistry Sets from Toys'r'Us ? Do you think they still have magnesium ribbon in them even if you could? I had a nightmare getting some spirits of salt as well. "uh? what?" Stuliet
Pretty easy to get from ebay; http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?satitle=isopropyl+alcohol Also, I think the 1Ltr from Maplins is a can and not an aerosol.

Chris Wilson
Ammonium Tri Iodide was my favourite. Boots will sell rubbing alcohol, I buy it there for the dogs ears (don't ask...).

keancy
I work at a Chemical firm lol and we have shi*loads of Acetone, works quite well for cleaning. And I hear some stick it in their petrol tanks
dangerous brain
Acetone is not brilliant with plastics. Same as stuff like MEK. Iso Propyl Alchohol is a soft solvent in as such as it damages the least amount. There are far better degreasants than IPA but most are far too aggresive on plastics. If you are really stuck a drop of petrol will suffice.

Yep you're right, I sussed that out after reading the description properly. I knew I'd be able to get it from a chemical supply house or something but I wanted to get this laptop cleaned up today. Thanks for the pointers everyone. Boots.. didn't think of them.
