miko_supra
saw a program the other night about people saying that police car chases should be banned as they endanger other motorists, pedestrians and are not necessary due to police helicopters that can be used. They didnt really go into much detail or discussion about this and thought it was quite an interesting topic...so...discuss? Found this too http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2069362.stm
Thorin
Helicopters cost a lot of money, they don't have enough resources to go after every scrote in cars let alone in the Helicopter. What needs to happen, IMO, is that is must be mandatory for police to use lights AND siren whenever they're speeding or going through red lights etc. I've seen several accidents caused by the police because they ran a red light with just their lights on. True, they are also pretty useless once the car is underneath a large bridge say. they reckon its all just a police macho thing.
jim_supra
Wow, that's an old article! These people are a bunch of hipocrites! if a stolen car was speeding through the street with no police following as it's not allowed and that car then ploughs into a bus stop, the police would be the first to get the blame, as they weren't giving chase. Police chases are necessary as it can take some time for a helicopter will be able to join a pursuit as it could be miles away when the call comes. The traffic police need to be there to keep a continuous eye on the suspect to guide the helicopter to the right place. There also needs to be more driver training on what to do when they see a police car with blues and two's on in their mirrors.

I totally agree, no matter the time of day/area etc. I consider myself as a very aware driver (checking all mirrors, blind spots, side roads, pedestrians, cyclists - you name it), however I've almost been taken out by speeding police cars on two separate occasions whilst they ran red lights. One time the car only had the lights and no siren, the other time it didn't have either! There also needs to be more driver training on what to do when they see a police car with blues and two's on in their mirrors. Also in agreement. IMO many people panic when they see the flashing lights and often make rash manoeuvres, causing more congestion and hazards. I've even had people complain that I didn't mount the kerb when being tailed by an ambulance - I'm not messing up my geometry and cracking my side skirts. Any officer failing to use the required equipment in an emergency such as beacons and sirens etc and is subject to prosecution under the law same as anyone else. The force I used to be with always taught extreme cautiousness at junctions and lights etc - even when using the blues and twos and have been seen and heard well before arriving at potential hazards. As to what to do when an emergency vehicle is coming up fast ... is simply slow down carry on and do nothing stupid like sudden braking or swerving as the police/fire or ambulance driver has more training and will decide the best action to take in passing smoothly and swiftly! There is no law regarding this though, only guidelines, and it is perfectly acceptable for them to use just lights.
