Serious Noise and Vibration Problems

Ever since I've had my car it made a noise when breaking gently at low speeds.

It was rythmical sound like a piece of rust on a brake disc was catching, the rate of the noise slows down as I slow down.

My mechanic said it sounded exactly like that and not to worry about it. A month ago we adjusted the hand brake under the the centre console and the noise seemed to get worse. Last week we removed the rear discs, removed all the rust, put the discs back on, adjusted the handbrake shoes and the noise is still there. I'm not sure but it might be quiter but it is still definitely there.

New problem now though. Twice since doing the work I've had a new noise which is far more worrying. After setting off as I pick up speed there is a loud rythmical noise and a bit of a vibration. In fact it is so loud I keep thinking that something major is going to all off the car or I am going to thrown off the road. As I brake the noise dies down and is replaced by the other noise at the same rythym so I guess the 2 are connected.

Like I said it has only happened twice where as the other noise is always there.

Anyone got any ideas of what the cause is?

Does it get worse when you take a corner?

When my wheel bearing was on its way out I used to get a "once pre revolution" kind of noise. A worn wheel bearing would let the hub (and therefore brake disc) wobble about between the brake pads. Braking would change the noise as it would clamp the disc firmly, but you would still be able to hear the bearing rumble.

Rear hub bearing, to do it properly it will PROBABLY need a new driveshaft and wheel hub, as well as bearing and seals. I keep the bearings, and may have a decent used shaft and hub, depending on side, as I could only buy as a complete set when i needed one a while ago. New will cost ££££ as the shafts are pricey. It's also a grade 8 job on a scale of 10 if you aren't used to very tight fit bearings and messing with hub assemblies, you NEED a big press.

I only hear a noise when breaking gently at low speed, for example in the middle of town. If I brake hard there is no noise and when cornering there is no noise.

The other, more extreme noise I've only heard twice but only lasted 10-20 seconds before going. I think in both cases I stopped at lights or a roundabout and when I pulled away again the noise had gone.

Anyway I'll book the car into the garage asap.

Hi mark, check the rear calipers are not starting to seize up wind them back and pump back out a few times clean the hangers that the pads sit in to to stop the pads getting stuck.

If the brake fluid looks dirty change that too as this was probably the main cause of the calipers seizing up.

What the disc run out like check this with a dti gauge.

Cant remember the set up for the handbrake shoes...rule of thumb is slacken off the handbrake cable and then adjust the shoes until they lock then back off a few clicks so they rotate freely then adjust the cable still checking that no rubbing occurs.

I had a problem once with a knocking from the rear/diff area sound really bad so much so i stopped on the motorway expecting to find something hanging off and funny it only seemed to be really bad on on certain roads anyway it ended up being a wheel working loose due to some knob nut leaving a spacer off the inside center(hub) of one of the wheels(after market fitment).

Hope you get it sorted...

Been driving the car around for the last couple of days and the bad noise at speed has not happened again. The noise that I get when I break gently doesn't happen all the time and is a bit quiter so I have no idea of what is causing it.

When I took the discs off to clean the rust off the mechanicand I adjusted the handbrake so that is ok.

All the wheel nuts are tight as I torqued them up myself.

Will book it back into the garage at some point.
