ttsupra97
Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has any evidence to support the case that the us/uk spec fuel pump is higher flowing than the jap spec pump (or at least the fact that they have different part numbers)? Thinking of getting a us pump to support my us injectors, just i want to make sure it's actually worthwhile. Cheers, Tony.
Terminator
Oh yes much better. There is loads of stuff on here about fuel pumps. Just search.
Guest Martin F
Yes the UK\US pump is defenitely a higher spec item than the Jap spec one. TDI used to have a comparison graph on their site somewhere but i can't find it at the mo. As Phil says search this forum and you should turn up some facts and figures. ttsupra97
Thanks for the replies guys. I just did some searches on the net comparing a walbro pump with the us fuel pump and it looks like a walbro is actually a better buy. They are cheaper new than most secondhand us pumps... Cheers, Tony.
Syed Shah
There was also some stuff on Supraforums proving that the Walbro pump was crap and actually flows less than a stock US fuel pump. Although some people do run two of them to make sure the flow is in fact higher.
Steve W
TDi do/did their own one as well (or IS that the Walbro ? ). They say on their site that THAT one is cheaper than UK/US and flows more as well ? ? ? Obviously, I presume they ONLY provide more fuel IF required ? ? ie. the car has SAME consumption until 'extra' is needed ? ? It's just that it CAN deliver more when required ? ? Guest Martin F
LOL. I don't know anything about the TDI specific one, but generally uprated pumps can flow more fuel at a given PSI. The pressure in the fuel system is regulated by a rising rate fuel pressure regulator and as your manifold pressure increases then so does your fuel pressure. Therefore as you increase your boost pressure you are also placing a further demand on the fuel system. At the same time as this rising rate of fuel pressure your pump needs to be able to deliver enough fuel so that the injectors can open at up to 80% duty cycle (an agreed safe working maximum for injectors) without there being a major drop in fuel pressure. So as you can see it would be quite easy to top out the fuel system by just increasing the boost (if your turbo's are capable).
Ian C
I concur. I got a US spec pump and it didn't facking work, so I have to send it back to the US get a replacement (they won't refund on fuel bits ) CW sorted me out with a Walbro pump instead, and if he uses them, I'll go along with that for now... So, I'll have a spare US spec pump (same as UK spec) in a couple of weeks should you want it. It's $189.70 from Jay Marks, and $50 shipping on top of that. That's about £155 all in. Better than the UK price of £206 and a longer wait to get it!! You can have this replacement one if you want it, when it arrives. Brand spanking new, still in the box and under warranty, no shipping charges, £120. -Ian
