Quite a few insurance companies have staff who don’t really know much about Supras and some TT quotes are actually for the MKIII. Your quote seems very low given you age unless you live in the middle of nowhere. Any good company will want to know the precise model of any imported TT not just whether it is TT or NA.

 

I am not trying to put you off but you should get some more quotes from some of the companies recommend on here and see how they compare. As you said in an earlier post you budget is tight, so you need to get an accurate figure before you go any further.

I'm pretty sure that the best quote was from Admiral and I know that I got quite a good quote from Adrian Flux but I can't remember for sure which was the cheaper.

 

It's really nice to see how many people have replied so quickly to help a newbie :)

 

I really hope to have a supra by the end of January. I am quite tempted by the TT that was linked earlier in this post.....hmmmmm

 

I will make some more calls to insurance companies to ensure that I am getting a quote that will actuall cover my car!!

I've had my NA for 3.5 years, I love to drive fast, but I've never wished I'd gone for a TT. Perfectly happy with my baby, she's been totally reliable (touch wood), no turbos to nurse on the short commute to work, gets just as much attention as a TT (possibly more, as it roars louder), still faster than probably 98% of cars on the road and currently insured ridiculously cheaply (thanks to Liv Vic... can't see me getting such a good deal next year!) MPG is barely better than a TT though, depending on driving style.

IMO you'd be better with an ST205 Celica GT-Four or rev.3 MR-2 Turbo over an N/A Supra. They're better cars, I say this after driving all the cars concerned. The Celica and MR-2 can give the Supra TT a run for it's money in the performance stakes so if your budget won't stretch to a Supra TT they're a better option than the N/A Supra.

Hi Daniel and welcome,

 

I'd recommend test driving as many cars as you can NA, TT, Auto, Manual before chosing which to get. When I got mine 5 years ago I was originally going to get an NA but drove a TT and knew I had to have one.

 

I would also see if there are any members local who could check out any cars with you when you go to see them. If you are on a budget you need to make sure you get a good car that is not going to cost you on expensive repairs after you get it.

Further to the above, here are some of my thoughts on buying a “fresh” import. An import gives you lots of advantages, clean –no rust, low mileage, better choice, hopefully serviced. If you’re after a Supra, a Jap car may be the only option anyway!

 

I have an NA Jspec and I haven’t problems with the fact it’s an import. Parts are easy to obtain, the Toyota garage fully supports it and even the independent garages locally can source parts. My insurance is reasonable (although I suspect I could insure a UK TT for a similar price).

 

One thing a would say though, for the sort of money you want to spend, you might want to avoid “fresh” imports. By this I mean a car that’s just been brought into the UK and for which you’ll be the first registered keeper. You see them on ebay quite a lot and there are lots places that will import for you.

 

My reasoning is that a fresh import will need time and money spent on it :-

- The speedo and odo need converting to MPH (£100)

- Rear fog lamp needs to be fitted

- If it’s less than ten years old it’ll need to be SVA tested

- It will have to registered with the DVLA

- MOT’d etc.

- The insurance company will probably need you to fit a CAT1 alarm (£300-£500)

 

The importer or dealer, may do all or some of these things for you, but do check. Then there’s to fact that most imports have no service history, so fairly soon you’ll probably want to:-

- Have a full service (£200-£400?)

- Change the timing belt (£200)

 

Plus remember you’ll be buying a ten year old (ish) car. The supra is a very well engineered, so you’re not likely to have reliability problems. But some things do wear out with age. Things like hoses and boot rubbers perish. Gas filled shocks get spongy! That sort of thing.

 

Obviously each car should be judged on merit, but if you can find one that’s previously been in the UK for a year or so and has had these things attended to by the previous owner - then you won’t have to shell out as much!

I was more than happy with my N/A supe which I had for 3.5 years til I started hanging with this BBS crowd :p After a few occasions of being blown away by TT's at meets I got bitten by the bug. I ended up swapping it for a Modded TT in the end but that was after over a year of umming and ah'ing about wether to change it or not (I had an aero and wanted the replacement to be an aero as well which made the jump up alot more expensive).

 

I can certainly reccomend the buy an N/A keep it for a couple of years or more and really learn to drive it (take it to track days like I did with mine). MOD it up a bit with exhausts and body bits (but try and get second hand stuff as you don't want to spend too much cash on it). Then when your budget can stretch to it start to look for a TT that is allready BPU and has some styling mods that way you won't comparatively lose all the money you put into your N/A.

 

Insurance wise that quote you have there has to be for a mk3 as I am over 30 and the insurance companies you are talking about all quoted me a lot more than that for my N/A and incidentally my new TT.

If you are in the basingstoke area, you can have a look at mine, I'm sure someone in basingstoke area will show you a TT as well....

 

My advice, if you have not had a sup before is to start with the NA, which can be just as much of handful in the wet... the TT is worse with a heavy foot....

 

Don't underestimate the NA as a starter...

Had both an NA (briefly) and a TT and have loved both of them suppose the TT just gives more of a grin factor.

 

I think that if your considering other cars then perhaps the Supe isn't for you after I had driven 1 that was it I had to have one at any cost considering anything else never entered my mind and i'm sure thats the same for other forum members.

Yes its obvious the TT has more top end power but as the guys on the east anglia gumball should remember the car kept up with the TT guys ok. I am more than happy with an NA.

 

I guess its just a little frustrating when you are hammering the loud pedal and TT goes past but to be honest its not that often

And to further that point I did a BPU TT on a spirited cross country single carriageway A road in my N/A so when you remove the TT's outright brutability like taking them both off dual carriageways the difference becomes almost negligible (OK I am a tad on the loony side so my overtaking maneouvres can be a bit more aggressive than most). I also convincingly held off a facelift TT around silverstone which is a grand prix circuit in my N/A. If you are a drivers driver and want to learn what the car can do round corners and not just down the motorway the N/A is deffers the way to go first as they are a bit more pushable.

Tha N/A still has a fair amount of poke and is a great all rounder.

Cost is definately an issue for me at the moment so the NA is quite tempting.

 

A few people have voiced that they didn't think it was worth getting a supra if it wasn't the turbo model. What do you guys think. Either way I'll definately being joining the supra gang soon :flame Dev

Is the NA really that bad? NO!

I chose an NA over a TT because I wanted a facelift model, in a specific colour, and the only TT I saw that came close was twice the price. Also, the TT seems to need a bit more caution as a daily driver. I have driven a TT and they are great, but IMHO the NA is great too. I am very happy with my decision, and get just as much "grin factor" as the TT guys and girls. I can easily do 150mph on a good road (I mean track, officer :innocent: ), and there are not many places where I would get the opportunity to do more than that, realistically, and keep my license long term.

 

Try both with an open mind and no preconceptions - you will be surprised at how much power the NA has. :)

I get a funny feeling you won't be able to insure any jap car at the moment, which only leaves the TT anyway!!
The Supra TT isn't a Jap car? :conf:

 

 

Remember that TT's have a limited slip diff which makes quite a difference to the back ends stability.
