Ewen
Traffic lights, I'm usually in neutral...pedestrian crossings especially. Junctions, roundabouts, I'm on the brake only.
Tom
I think you'll find most people put their foot on the break brake
razza
sometimes, especially at level crossings and where I'm stuck for a while.

Pixelfill
most of the time when stationary - NEVER when in motion Mike
MarkR
Sometimes I stick it in "R" for "Racing"!!!
RedM
Never put it in P. That brief flash of reverse light as you move to D lets the prat behind know you are in an auto and he'll immediately think he's much faster than you and will demonstrate this by sitting on your arse for miles. juanchan
I'll stick it in neutral if I'm at a red traffic light or at a level crossing. Give way lines and such I hold it on the brake.
SupraGirlie
It's weird because I never use neutral except when I'm in traffic lights and even then I don't always but when I was in someone elses supra they were constantly in neutral like when approaching lights/roundabout etc. Does it make a difference? NeoFuture
makes your gearbox last a lot longer apparently, also stops the stress on your brakes, makes them last longer too
mattanna
once i stuck it into neutral at 80 odd mph whilst in manual mode, soon changed into gear!!

I understand that coasting in Neutral on the autobox is a very bad thing (from what I've read on here) Something to do with the Autobox oil pump not operating when out of gear. Hopefully Alex or someone technically reliable will be able to confirm this. Mike
NeoFuture
isnt it coasting with no toque from the engine (ie engine off or towing) thats the bad thing to do
Pixelfill
isnt it coasting with no toque from the engine (ie engine off or towing) thats the bad thing to do It could well be - hence me hoping that some input from the Technical team will be forthcoming

Pixelfill
. . . Look here for a Chris Wilson pearl of wisdom.......... . . . . Buggering buggeration. And there was me thinking how good I was being by conscientiously shifting into neutral every time the car is stationary for two nanoseconds. Sigh. Arse! The Restorer
Auto's should be so easy to drive, yet no-one knows how. Personally I always keep it in Drive and then use L and 2 as some form of stress relief. CW confirms to leave it in D unless your going to be stopped for a while. MLC
Some owners may also find like myself that if you join an A road while the car still idling high (on choke as it were). When you do finally begin to stop from traffic, even after 45 mins, the car will still idle high and takes a good minute of being stationary to reduce to warm idle (which doesn't happen much in tailbacks). Sticking it in Neutral when you stop reduces this time to about 5-10 secs. But that's about the only use i've ever found for using neutral during a journey.
