Plasma vs LCD TVs

Recommended Posts

I currently have a Panasonic 32" LCD TV, but am intending to replace it with a plasma - almost certainly the Pioneer PDP-428XD. I'm trying to force myself to wait until January, since I suspect the prices will drop over Christmas - time will tell whether I'm successful.

Anyway - I've seen people ask several times, which is better : Plasma or LCD. I was browsing the Pioneer website and they have this independent study document there which is interesting reading. Given that Pioneer and Panasonic paid for it, it's possible it gives the results they wanted - but I thought it was interesting reading and might help people decide if they are currently debating which to buy.

You will not be disappointed with the Pioneer. Fabulous picture and great features. I spent ages comparing plasma / LCD panels when I bought mine, and although things have moved on since, the Pioneer continues to score extremely well in any of the consumer comparisons. That said, theres some great LCDs out there too:d

Over on AV forums the consensus is that that the Pioneer ones are the ones to go for followed by Panasonic.

The plasma screens are best for watching sport.

I don't watch sport - but my mate bought a Panasonic plasma at about the same time I bought Panasonic LCD and I did think his picture was better.

In case anybody wonders - I wasn't planning to start an LCD vs Plasma debate. I've already made my mind up that I want plasma - now, I just need to decide when I want to spend £1500.

Great price considering at the moment it comes with an offer from Panasonic for a 5 year warranty !! You get a form from the dealer and send it off to Panasonic. Only thing is I think the offer runs out end of November?

Warranty offer below:

I love the picture, sound is a bit poor but I have an AV tuner with 5.1 so that sorts that out. I couldn't see any point in forking out more for a Pioneer really.

:dI kind of missunderstood the thread title, sorry

'Plasma vs LCD TVs'

Yeah - but you're supposed to read the post too. :p

I have no doubt it will turn into a debate anyway. I've not been overly impressed with LCD really. It's OK - but I did see a Pioneer plasma in a shop today and it was way better (although I suspect it had an HD source).

Certainly is, bought exactly the some one mate

Had a 37" Panasonic Viera before that, and loved that too - it's now on the bedroom wall :D

I was starting to think I was a bit of a pikey for a minute:d All this talk of £3k plasmas.

I'm well happy with it, for the price I think it's superb and maybe it'll be an option for others reading this thread:)

Plasma is generally better for standard definition TV (especially with sports & motion) and 1080i HD.

Personally, I'm getting an LCD over a Plasma because I want 1080p (for PC, PS3, X-Box 360, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray).

The £1079 Plasma 1080p PZ70 from Panasonic will run all of that stuff...the only reason I'm still considering LCD is though cause I'm worried about the picture in games/on the HTPC...but since Hughes have offered me a weekend trial of either/both I guess I'll find out!

So I see! Cool. It's only with this topic that I've gone back to look at Plasma's.

Shame the PZ70 is 42" - that's a bit too big for me :( Good standard-def and black blacks AS WELL AS 1080p would be sweet. AND that's a damn sight cheaper than the Bravia 3500 I'm looking at.

If you go with the trial, please let us know what you think!

Won't be trialing till the new year unfortunately...but as far as std def is concerned it's far superior to the Sony. Image is much less noisey. My only concern is how it looks on the PC ;) It does EVERYTHING else so well.

They do a 42 and 50"...it's said that 40" is the watershed for LCD v Plasma. Above 40" go plasma, below go LCD.
