xeno Posted November 10, 2007 Share Posted November 10, 2007 My malfunction light comes on/off from time to time, and I noticed that the brake fluid is low. On the reservoir cap it says to use DOT 3 fluid. I have some DOT 4 fluid that says it's suitable to use as DOT 3 or 4 replacement, and that it is safe to mix with other fluids as long as they are not silicone based. How the hell would I know if the stuff in there at present is silicone based? Don't tell me I'm gonna have to drain the brakes completely. What's the worst that could happen? merckx Posted November 10, 2007 Share Posted November 10, 2007 The probabilty is that it's not silicone based (dot 5) unless some idiot has put some in, just put the dot 4 stuff in and you'll be okay. There are basically two types of fluid: 1. Glycol based 2. Silicone based Glycol based fluids can strip paintwork where as silicone based do not.
