Brake Fluid help

xeno

Recommended Posts

My malfunction light comes on/off from time to time, and I noticed that the brake fluid is low.

On the reservoir cap it says to use DOT 3 fluid.

I have some DOT 4 fluid that says it's suitable to use as DOT 3 or 4 replacement, and that it is safe to mix with other fluids as long as they are not silicone based.

How the hell would I know if the stuff in there at present is silicone based? :search:

Don't tell me I'm gonna have to drain the brakes completely. :(

What's the worst that could happen?

The probabilty is that it's not silicone based (dot 5) unless some idiot has put some in, just put the dot 4 stuff in and you'll be okay.

There are basically two types of fluid:

1. Glycol based

2. Silicone based

Glycol based fluids can strip paintwork where as silicone based do not.

Try putting a little on the front wing and see if it's strips the paint.:D
