Rev Counter not working

My Rev Counter appears to have stopped working. Towards the end of a long journey, the needle suddenly started jumping all over the place, then when I turned off the ignition, never came back.

This is on a 1994 Manual TT.

Everything else appears to be working and sounding fine.

Where's the best place for me to start in order to fix this?

Removing the dash? The diagnostics port? Or should I take it into a garage?

Any help or advice be gratefully received.

Update: Searched the forums on this, but not really found an answer. Also, just been for a quick drive and the needle has come back to life, although flickering madly - loose connection?

i had some similar problems to this in the past, but normally it was my speedo that stopped reading.

it turned out to be a loose / bad connection behind the dash - was quite easy to spot as it was pretty much disconnected from the socket.

if its your rev counter only maybe it could be a loose connection on the RPM sensor rather than the dash dsiplay (would probably be easier to check as well)
