Gaz6002
Me and a mate have had enough of this country and we've got a plan. We want to travel around the world in a Land Rover. What are peoples thoughts on this? I'm interested particularly in Landy-based experiences, places to go and also things to do/not do along the way. Before anyone says it, I'm fully aware that i'm certifiably insane but you all need to know that we are 100% serious about doing this and are planning on buying a vehicle this month. We've got a basic route planned - through Europe, down through Africa, the up towards Russia, down through India, China, the on to Austrilasia, then over the Pacific to the Americas. This very much subject to change. So, opinions? Advice? Oh, and be nice!

Gaz6002
Take plenty of spares!! could do with a support vehicle Hehe We are going to spend 2 full weeks on the car making sure it's up to the task. We will be looking for one with loads of space for spares as well. Does this idea mean I want to be a gypsy? I can't quite get my head around that lol. JonW
I've travelled in a fair few countries in Africa and South America. Whilst in these areas I have met quite a few people doing the trips by car. As long as you have all your visas sorted then it's fairly straight forward. If you are American or travelling with an American then Visas and problems at borders are a lot worse in some countries. Might be worth watching 'The Long Way Down' They are doing John O'Groats to Cape Town on bikes.

I won't be travelling with Americans at all, just Britons. Still, aren't we just as hated? Maybe i'll buy some Swiss clothing or something! JonW
In Africa and South America I've never really had problems at any borders. Do expect to pay the odd bribe to border officials. They don't threaten you, they just say that's $20 please. You will know there is no $20 fee but it's best to just pay it for an easy life. This probably happened at 3 of the 8 borders I crossed in SA, and maybe 2 of the 6 I crossed in Africa. I'm actually off to Tanzania on Friday, I'm flying into Kenya so will experience the fun that is African borders again:-)
