hard to get into 2nd gear

this only happened after the gearbox oil was changed is this just cause of the oil used ? thanx

How long have you had the car?

Did the bad gear change coincide with the first time you've driven it in the colder weather?

Mine doesn't go into second that easy on a cold morning until it's warmed up a bit.:)

My gear changes have been terrible since changing to Envy's recommended oil, Motul 300.

Plus they told me i needed 1 litre, when it should be 2. So my car's been running with 50% of oil in it for 2 months :(

The cold weather has made the problem pretty bad, so I'm gonna go for another oil change, this time to the right stuff.

Holy f**k dude!

It's about 1.5L to fill up - should reach the filler hole on a flat surface.

Gear 300 is great for the Diff (just like the Silkolene Syn 5 (75w/90) i used). But it's not for use in the gearbox. Not starting anything but are you 100% positive that Envy said to use it in the gearbox? And that they knew what the application was?

Here's what I was told:

"Motul Gear 300 is £12 for 1l (2 needed for gearbox and diff)"

in this thread: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=26723

And also on the phone when I ordered :(

How much oil is needed for the diff? That's got 1 litre in it as well.

I also suffer from a stiff gearbox when the temperatures are down, although I usually have trouble getting into 1st rather than second....

I was told by Toyota, not to worry about it, and that when the car warmed up it would be okay - sure enough it is, so I dont worry about it....

Maybe I should though reading some of your comments guys!

My gearbox is the same.

It's got the right oil, correct amount, recently changed, still is a bit stiff going into 2nd when the box is cold.

AFAIC, all of the MKIV manual boxes are like this, typicallly in 2nd (not heard of a problem with 1st).

I seem to remember reading somewhere that some cars were sent back to Toyota in the US because their new owners were not prepared to put up with the clunky gear change. Don't know if this is true though.

When the box warms up, 2nd is just as clunky as all the other gears!

Personally, I like the gearbox.....it has a nice positive feel......especially for an early 6 speed box that will handle loads of power!

The V160 oil is for the V160/161 (6-speed) gearbox only.

The W58 5-speed used in the NA is a different animal all together.

The 6-speed gearbox is "clunky" and solid...any gearbox that can take the abuse people like CRD and Paul Whiffin give it has got to be tough - and having that toughness will mean there are IMO minor downsides. But you can make things a whole lot worse than they should be. V160 was designed for that gearbox. If other oils worked we'd know about them by now cause the Yanks have tried everything lol! Not having V160 oil in my car when I bought it, made 1st hard to use and 2nd nigh on impossible when cold. Yes it was fine when it warmed up but that's just not good enough! £4k for a new gearbox or £60 on decent oil - you decide. :banghead:

I do not know the service interval for the oil - if someone does know please post it here. but I believe it's something silly in the region of 60,000miles....aslong as you're not abusing the box too much. If you're not sure how good the oil is or whether you have enough or not - you cannot harm it by changing it! It takes about 10mins and can give you lots of piece of mind...doing it on a proper ramp will be easier though... you do want to keep the car flat to make sure you get the right amount in there.

The W58 gearbox is not as strong. Nor is it quite so picky about what is in it. I personally can't recommend any oil for it because I've not looked up what the stock stuff is rated at - again if someone knows we can look at hi-grade and good VFM replacements. The Syn5 from Silkolene and the Motul Gear 300 are probably ok for it...but I don't think the V160 oil would suit it at all in case anyone was thinking of going all out on their 5-speed box ;)

Cheers Alex.

I shall sorce some of the origanal stuff and change it asap.

Ill see if this cures the 1st gear stiffness.

info on the W58 - 5-speed gearbox.

5 Speed Manual Transmission Specifications (W58)

Gear Ratio

First 3.285

Second 1.894

Third 1.275

Fourth 1.000

Fifth 0.783

Reverse 3.768

Lubricant Capacity - Gearbox 2.6 Litres

Oil specifications API GL4 or GL5 75W90

So get an oil that matches or exceeds the API GL4/5 rating and is about 75w90.

If I'm not mistake the Motul Gear 300 would be best in this case.
