Learning Greek is bloody hard.

I have been attempting to learn Greek since moving out here and can now get by with basics but nowhere near conversational level. I decided to try and read more and so started to learn the alphabet and the sounds.

The trouble is, some of the lower case letters bear no resemblance to the upper case. Also, some of the letters e.g "P" dont sound anything like the English versions.

I can see this is going to be a long hard slog!

Try Japanese:

So far I've learnt 48 Hiragana. Got a few more to do then it's Katakana and I've just bought a book that teaches the first 448 Kanji!

Japanese is odd - even the Japanese can't speak it all. The last time I was in Tokyo I met a Japanese girl, and she was saying that even she cannot understand some of the news programs because they speak in such a formal way.

Mind you, the same could be said of English. Even on this forum there are several people for whom many simple words seem to be a complete mystery.;)

Hiragana and Katakana is easy compared to Kanji :D

Still, very satisfying when you start to understand signs, menus etc. Long hard slog though.

You'll be fine Colin, give it a few years and you'll speak Greek perfectly :)

My problem is the lack of contact with Greek speakers. That may sound silly seeing as I live here but working at the bar in the summer means speaking predominantly to Brits and then, in the winter, the Greeks are so "helpful" they speak English to me too! :(

Check out my sig. There you will find a perfect example of that. BTW, that was the exact wording in the post - no more, no less. Beggars belief eh? :(

Good luck with the Greek, Col :)

My new company has just informed me that I need to learn both Dutch and Arabic! Fun fun fun!

I once started to learn Arabic as I had been talking to a Bahrain company and it was looking likely I would be moving there. In all honesty, I think it was easier than Greek :(
