Paul Whiffin
Alright chaps, just upgraded to Vista which has windows mail instead of outlook express and the emails are eml files instead of dbx files. So I need to convert my old dbx files into eml so I can use them within windows mail. Anyone know of any free software around that'll do it? Cheers Paul
carl0s
File -> Import -> Outlook Express 6 -> Choose an OE Store directory. If you just want to do a couple of messages, drag'n'drop drops them as .eml files.
Paul Whiffin
Tried that, it doesn't wok.
carl0s
Tried that, it doesn't wok. It ought to. What's happening? I have a think called MailNavigator which might do it, but really the above is the proper way to do it.
Paul Whiffin
I'll have to check this out on my machine at work tomorrow. I think doing it this way doesn't do them individually though anyway? Just starts a new folder where all the dbx files go into? I really want to extract all my inbox files and place them in my new inbox eml file and then the same for sent items, etc. Know what I mean? carl0s
Yeah, sort of except you don't have an inbox eml file, you have an Inbox folder with each individual message stored as a .eml file. The import should work just fine. I should think it'll ask you where you want to files dumped. I should say, I haven't actually done it, but I really can't see that Windows Mail would just create a new folder and use the dbx file for that, it would almost certainly import from the .dbx thereby creating .eml messages. I upgraded my XP Pro laptop to Vista and all my messages became .eml files, so I would think that's that case anyway.
Paul Whiffin
It wont do it I'm afraid. I bought a new pc with Vista on it and my old pc was xp so I'm trying to extract the files from my old pc on to my new one.
carl0s
I understand what you're trying to do. I'll test it with a .dbx file from my XP Pro machine now.
carl0s
Right, it does work, but it requires the Folders.dbx file to be present alongside the whatever.dbx file you want to import from. It then imports into "Imported Folders -> Foldername", and the messages are indeed turned into individual .eml files. I have 9,600 of them now You can then select them all and drag them into your normal inbox from within Windows Mail. Normally you would have moved/copied the entire OE store directory anyway so would have the Folders.dbx already there, but if you have just brought across Inbox.dbx then you'll need to go get Folders.dbx too. The OE store directory can be found via Tools -> Options -> Maintenance -> Store Directory in Outlook Express.

Paul Whiffin
I cant get this to work! I've saved all the .dbx files I had on my old machine under a file on my new machine, I just called it outlook express which I presume is ok? I go to file -import - messages - microsoft outlook express 6 - browse - click on the file I called outlook express and then it says no messages can be found in this folder. Folders.dbx is present. Any ideas?
carl0s
Strange. Where have you put this Outlook Express folder? Is it under your Documents folder? Do you have any antivirus software that might be scanning the .dbx files and thereby locking them as you're try to access them?
carl0s
I did pay the $5 for a copy of DBXtract about six months ago. Can't remember if it saves as .eml but I suspect it does. Looking for the program now. edit: here you go (attached). You can "borrow" my copy of DBXtract. I'll delete it off this post shortly though as I don't want to get in trouble for pirating a reasonably priced piece of software. I suppose if I was there in person I'd just run it myself and it'd all be kosher anyway I've only used it once, maybe six months ago, but the web page says you can drag/drop from its interface. carl0s
Just going back to your difficulty using the Windows Mail import wizard. You haven't renamed the .dbx files have you? I should imagine Folders.dbx contains entries listing the different .dbx files by filename.
