Single Turbo

Hi there everyone, Thinking of going SINGLE turbo route and am trying to get as much info before i start so i dont under estimate the project..... Havent got endless money to spend but would like to get good value for money! I would like to get about 500-600bhp!!!

My car is currently BPU with front mount!

 

I have heard alot of people using T67 turbo! is this any good??

 

I know i need ECU, bigger injectors 800cc,fuel rail, fuel reg,afr gauge!

 

Would i benifit from using the HKS cams as the head will be off to fit uprated head gasket and stem seals etc....

 

What sort of thickness gasket would be best?

 

Sorry to ask so many questions but you guys seem to be the best people to ask!

First of all what budget do you have? To do it properly you're looking at around £8K upwards.

 

The T67, is a popular choice good for up to and above 600hp. Many members are using these, so I'll let them explain what they are like.

 

I personally use a Garrett GT35R (dual ball bearing), which is similar in size to a T61. Mine makes around 542hp and for me is a perfect street setup, as it is very responsive with minimal lag. Have a look through my garage for full spec.

 

HKS cams will make a big difference on a single turbo car.

 

Use standard thickness head gasket, either OEM Toyota or HKS.

 

I would try to get a ride in as many single turbo Supras as possible, to get a feel for the different turbos.

I would have thought for 6k or so he would get the lot bought and installed, can get BL stage one kit for $3700 (£1800)...... t61 or t67 prob best size to go for, dont want much lag with t88 etc, want quick spool down low rev range im guessing?

 

Ur FMIC should be ok, ul need a better clutch if urs is a standard unit (£300+ approx)

Injectors( £400 approx)

Fuel Rail (££)

Your fuel pump from bpu should be ok (Walbro 255lph)?

Ecu, standalone like aem or apexi pfc if u can get it for the supra, or piggyback like Emanage is about £300 i think?

 

You should be able to get all the parts u need for 4k then the rest on getting a reputable guy to carry out the work for you..Should always allow urself to have an extra 1 or 2k though incase u need something else,Brakes,tyres etc etc

No chance. My T61 install has cost over £7k so far.

 

EDIT: I'd like to think i've done it "properly" though.

 

I wouldnt say NO chance? what else did u have to purchase? did u already have the fmic,fuel pump etc etc?

 

EDIT: Wouldnt mind paying the extra 1k like i said if its done 100% and happy with the result!

It all adds up and always comes to more than you think, here's a rough list just off the top of my head. I'm sure there'll be more that I've forgotten. I'd budget £8k minimum, but expect to pay more.

Trust me it soon adds up, there are loads of bits you dont think of till your building it. And if your not doing it yourself the labour bill will be fairly big.

Have been thinkin of going this route next year myself, I think the best way is not to look at the overall figure,but make a list like Nics there, buy some parts now, some at xmas, some at march etc and the by summer ul have everything ready to go and it wont feel like uve just spent a bomb!!

I was already BPU mate with FMIC. I bought a couple of new fuel pumps with the other fuel bits. I also already had the Power FC so mine is comparitively quite a cheap conversion ;)

Good plan, research, planning and preparation is the key.

 

First thing I would do, would be to get your car thorough checked over to ensure everything is in good working order, prior to doing the conversion. ie. check suspension, brakes, wheel bearings, engine compression test, check for oil leaks, check pumps, alternator, wiring, coil packs, radiator condition, IC condition, etc, etc. If everything is in good working order, then hopefully there will be no nasty suprises later on down the line.

 

Then start to compile a thorough list of everything you'll need, down to the smallest of fittings, gaskets, etc.

 

Another critical bit of research is into who is going to do the installation and mapping. Don't go with the cheapest offer, go with someone who is going to do the job properly, someone with a good reputation and a lot of experience.

Just seen on the fleebay XS power gt45 turbo and they seem to rate it............ Any experience with this as it seems extremly cheap and there is usually a reason for that!!!!!

 

Yes, I have 1st hand experience of these XS power kits. Unless you are very lucky, nearly every part is garbage.

 

Seriously, don't even consider it.

Cheap for a reason!!!! Buy the PHR or the BL kits, good price and quality

Seriously, don't even consider it.

 

allthough i dont use an XS power manifold or turbo an option to consider would be to spend some money on a good make of turbo (BL, PHR, etc) and take the risk on a cheaper manifold as i have not heard of anyone having any trouble with one, this would represent quite a saving over the full kit

Dont consider the XS Power unless you want to spend time and money to get it to fit. Ive fitted one and it took some work but the car has been running now for 5000 miles and the turbo is fine, no horror stories like you hear.

 

It made 405 bhp on standard fuel system, stock ecu, running 264 cams and 0.85 bar boost (Super T70 Turbo).

 

Not bad for a turbo everyone slags off!!

Gaz1 had trouble with his, opening for the wastegate too narrow so couldn't control boost. Also I think he said recently that it has cracked.

The manifolds are fine now, they have bracing bars to stop them from cracking and the welding and finish is actualy very good. I am not saying get one because they are great but if your handy with the spanners and dont mind some work they are great value for money and they do work.

 

I personly would not put one on my car and would not like to fit one again because it was a pain in the arse and nothing fits correctly. All that considered the kit I fitted on Aristo above cost £600 and that included the intercooler. We just had to make the intercooler pipe work, modify the downpipe, modify the manifold, modify the screamer pipe........etc......etc... you get the picture. :)

Ryan G lost a turbo because bits of weld came off the inside of the XS power manifold he was running so I really wouldn't go with one of those either. Also I think one of the bracing bars has to be removed to fit it properly anyway and also again the bracing bar is fixed, so it'll expand at a different rate to the exhaust runners as it all heats up and probably cause more harm than good.
