MichaelG
Its about that time, and i am considering putting my MKIV N/A 1994 J-Spec into Toyota to get the Timing Belt done, but they are notorious for overpricing here. Can someone give me a rough estimate of what i should be looking to pay to have the timing belt supplied and fitted by them please ? Also is the standard belt fine enough, or is there an aftermarket one thats stronger for just the same price ? Cheers Michael
Digsy
£215.93 at my local Toyota dealer.
weinelm
I payed £193 at my local Toyota garage. I was expecting it to be more! Timing belt £28.83 Labour £135.50 Consumables £3.50 Plus the dreaded VAT £28.76 Worth having done on a Jspec for peace of mind, cos they don't seem to have much in the way of service history. weinelm
...Which reminds me... Before I had my belt changed there was a little sticker on the camcover that said something in Japanese about the milage of the timing belt change. Does anyone know if this means:- a) Mileage that the belt WAS changed at, or b) Mileage that the belt is DUE for change. Since I've had my belt done I have a new sticker that says in English option a). But wonder is the Jap label is different? I want to know cos it would probably help be verify whether my ODO milage is genuine or not!
Nic
Power Enterprise make uprated timing belts for the Supra, I have one fitted on my car, not sure how the cost compares to standard belt. http://www.power-enterprise.co.jp/
Barnstormer
weinelm if you post a picture of the sticker I will translate it for you. My Japanese is rusty but still OK. ATB
paul mac
having done the belt myself, if you can get a price of £200 like the above guys i would say that is a fair price, its not a hard job just alot of messing particularly if the bottom pulley nut wont come off, see if you can get a fixed price

weinelm
if you post a picture of the sticker I will translate it for you. My Japanese is rusty but still OK. ATB Please see attached. Sorry it's a bit grainy - I couldn't separate it from the new one stuck on top, so I had to scan it from the back and flip it!
Barnstormer
was fairly straighforward to translate. Basically is says: Timing Belt Replacement (Maintenance Record) Was Replaced: 21 April 2001 Mileage: 99396 km So that was when it was done, not when it needed to be done. The dates are in Japanese format which is a bit different. The 13 4 21 means 13th year of Emperor Showa's reign, 4 month, 21st day. Currently it is Year 16 in Japan by their calendar. Hope this helps. ATB
weinelm
That's great thank you! That all seems to stack up. Looks like I might have replaced my belt a year or so early... but theres no harm in that!
mr keef
when should it be changed? miles wise?
rob wild
I had mine inspected by a local Toyota dealer and they said it could do with changing, the car has done 43K, but they were charging 260 pounds to do it! So i took it to a local garage that deals with imports and they replaced all the belts for £160 which i was really please with. As far as changing the belts etc i was told to have a look at the maintenace schedule below: http://www.mkiv.com/manual/manualtt/maintenance_schedule/a.jpg I don't know where people follow it or not.
