Doesn't really surprise me - many (most?) Americans seem to have no clue about keeping a safe stopping distance, regularly driving literally 3-4 feet from the SUV in front (that affords no forward visibility) at 80+ mph. Bear in mind half of them are on their mobiles / drinking / eating at the same time.

They say keep a minimum gap of 2 seconds from the vehicle in front but obviously this must be increased to compensate for road/weather conditions.

Only thing is, on motorway driving when all lanes are flowing at same speeds, if i leave a safe gap some twaz will move into it, thus taking away your nice safe gap

I can vouch for that. What is the point of them enforcing low 55mph speeds while allowing phone use, tailgating and eating a 3 course chinese with chopsticks while at the wheel?
