RedM
I think I'm going to take the plunge, buy some tools and do some of my own service work. So, what tools do I need and how difficult are the following bearing in mind I can't get under the car on my drive AT ALL. Spark Plugs Fuel Filter O2 Sensor Diff Fluid swap Oil Filter An oil change is probably a no go along with brake based stuff as I can't lift the car safely on our drive. So, how easy/difiicult and what do I need to do the above jobs? Also, what else can I do myself based on my driveway circumstances? As ever, thanks. Daston
Spark Plugs on a TT took me around 30min to 1 hour to change Fuel filter is on the end of the pump I think and shouldnt be too hard 02 Sensors are on the manifold and you can either get from it from the bottom or strip the intake and heat sheild and get to it from the top. Dont know about diff Oil filter can be done from the bottom or the top (I am lead to believe) I have no mechanical background and I have had no problems anything is DIYable as long as you have the tools for the job. Pete
Fuel filters can be difficult to remove if seized. CW mentioned the labour price on this job could vary in his experience. Oil is dead easy, although getting the filter out is much easier from underneath, but takes longer if you remove the under tray.
Whitesupraboy2
Spark Plugs - Easy, however buy some coil pack connector cases just incase Fuel Filter - Easy if not stuck - id prob pay for that to be done O2 Sensor - Easy, just pain in getting too Diff Fluid swap - no idea Oil Filter - Easy but bit messy, I do my car without jacking it up, 2 bricks is all thats needed (I dont know if you have a belly though Martin ) Oil filter is the worse part I just put a black bin liner under it and catch it though
carl0s
Diff Fluid swap, you'll want a square-drive hex bit to put on a breaker bar. Allen keys just won't cut it. Other than that it should be easy. Mine is due to be done. Fuel filter, you'll need pipe spanners for (flare-nut spanner). Both my Supras were easy on this one. You have to pull EFI fuses and turn over the engine to depressurise the fuel lines, and have a rag in place anyway as fuel will still piss out a bit. It's just behind the passenger front wheel arch. Oil filter, best to put a marigold on for better grip, and a tesco bag around it to drop into, then go at it with your hand bent around the passenger-front suspension pieces Spark Plugs, piece of cake with a set of allen keys for the cover.. You'll need a specific spark-plug socket though which is like a deep socket but it also has a rubber collar inside to grip the plug so that it lifts out of the deep well after unscrewing. Better order some of the rubber vent hoses if they haven't already been swapped.
RobSheffield
If you get the tools and want to pop to my house ill pop it on my ramps for some beer tokens I can sit and watch you to make sure you arent 'doing it all wrong'
Mike M
Ideally you'd want the car at a level height for changing the diff oil, I used 4 axle stands and took the oportunity to have a look at everything else under the car.
RedM
Spark Plugs - Easy, however buy some coil pack connector cases just incase I had the CP connectors replaced about a year to eighteen months ago Fuel Filter - Easy if not stuck - id prob pay for that to be done Paying someone to do it. Hmmmm..... well there is the potential for fuel everywhere. Oil Filter - Easy but bit messy, I do my car without jacking it up, 2 bricks is all thats needed (I dont know if you have a belly though Martin ) Oil filter is the worse part I just put a black bin liner under it and catch it though Absolutely cannot get under the car. Our drive slopes, is uneven and is pebbles rather than a tarmac surface! If you get the tools and want to pop to my house ill pop it on my ramps for some beer tokens I can sit and watch you to make sure you arent 'doing it all wrong' In the words of Col. John 'Hannibal' Smith "I love it when a plan comes together". Rob, Do you reckon plugs, oil, oil filter, O2 sensor and diff oil could be done in a day? I know you like to take your time........ Rob, Do you reckon plugs, oil, oil filter, O2 sensor and diff oil could be done in a day? I know you like to take your time........ Iv not done my own plugs yet, oil and filter are easy on a ramp, O2 sensor is easy, diff oil iv not done, but as long as you have some method of getting the new in i guess its all easy
RedM
My next task then is to use the search facility to find out to do the diff oil.
RobSheffield
Go go go At a guess you need some sort of filler neck and a drain plug location, i have oil drain bottles so we would be sorted on that front..
TLicense
If 2 of you are doing it, even not really knowing what you're doing, and having a good chin wag, a couple of bacon butties, and a bottle or two of beer, you could do it all in 3 hours. A mechanic ninja, I recon, could probably do the whole lot in an about an hour.

Mike M
piece of piss and most diff oil bottles have a long neck to get in the filler hole. Just remember and slacken off the filler plug first on the side before dropping the diff oil or you may be in trouble.
RedM
Just remember and slacken off the filler plug first on the side before dropping the diff oil or you may be in trouble. Could you explain why in a bit more detail, please?
Mike M
Well if you drop the oil out first and go to remove the filler plug and it wont budge then your stuck with no oil. No biggy just something to bear in mind the chances of it being stuck are slim but you never know.
