You had/have knee problems - DO NOT run to keep fit! It hammers the joints and is the reason most marathon runners are nigh-on arthritic by their 50s. Worse when your overweight!

Minismise the running, and go for low-impact instead. The X-trainer and step machines are good for this, along with rowing and cycling.

Good luck with it. Get a decent pair of running shoes, not the nike bubble crap.

Run on varied terrain tarmac and grass and also find hills to run up and down. Try a bit of high intesity training too (fast running for a minute followed by very slow jogging pace for 30 secs gradually increasing the fast pace as fitness improves.

I used to do a lot of running (10 miles a day) i managed a best run of 10 miles in 60 minutes and a mile and half in 7 minutes 40.

I did all that training for jopining the army so you don't need to go that far !

If you stick to it you will enjoy it after a while and will start to feel great and looking forward to the next run.

I just read through all this thread and was thinking 'he shouldnt be running at all if hes got fecked knee(s)

Syed is right dont run or you will feck your knees big time!

my left knee is mashed and I still kept running for over a year before I realised that it was screwing it even more!

I then bought a mountain bike and use this regularly - its great because you can mod it:D and IMO progress can be monitored more closely(cycle computer) and I think its easier to build up

'longer mileage' quicker on a bike than by running. It also works every muscle in the body and you can get some awesome machines nowadays

Finally the sense of achievement seems far superior as you tend to go further on a bike ride than you would on a jog and for this reason you tend to get back on the bike easier and soon it becomes a lifestyle

Thanks Syed, you're probably right! I would like to save my knees for playing football tbh....:) I may have to go back to the gym and use the cross trainers and bikes as before and keep the shock away from my dodgy knees!

Thanks for all the other comments......:D
