razza Posted October 30, 2007 Author Share Posted October 30, 2007 I must say the public came through good, a guy directly behind me in a golf (that I buried in smoke) hung around for quite a while until he knew I was ok (I've never seen so much smoke before-from exhaust, engine bay, airvents, crazy amounts). Then a while later after standing on the roadside being damn cold :sos:some guy pulls over and offers his help:thumbs:, but just had to wait for breakdown truck... razza Posted October 30, 2007 Author Share Posted October 30, 2007 (not sure why I'm running two threads on this, one here and one in technical, but anywho) Ok, spoke to Toyota Gt today and there was loads of oil coming out the induction pipe and oil was also under the car on the flatbed on the turbo side. He reckons the turbo is probably gone. The smell, and I'm sure there was a creamy goo under the filler cap (although was dark last night), made me think head gasket and the recovery guy also thought so to. So, this could just (!!) be a turbo failure, which means I now have a decision to make, do I stick with stock or go hybrid? If I choose the later how much more am I looking at, as I'm assuming I'd have to to mapping etc. on top:search: I won't find out the true extend until next week, it didn't sound like it was running too bad (sounded pretty normal for the few seconds it was on) when I turned it over to check oil warning lights etc...and I'm positive it was not overheating before hand (had been on the M4 at a constant 110-120leptons, then pulled up at lights, saw no warning lights). It happened as I left the lights at the junction 11 and the second turbo came on, then a few seconds later puff the magic dragon made an appearance:blink:. I didn't hear any noise though as I had the stereo on fairly loud:innocent: I came off the accelerator as soon as I noticed the smoke, must've been a few hundred yards by the time I came to stop. I didn't notice any loss of power as obviously I'd come straight off it, so not sure what damage this could've caused. going to get me a beer... Sheefa Posted October 30, 2007 Share Posted October 30, 2007 Razza, I'd say it sounds like a blown tubbie. I suffered exactly the same fate a few months back, one of my hybrids went pop. Plumes of white/grey smoke out the back as the housing on the tubbie has cracked and I 'assume' it was leaking water onto the hot metalwork. I would stick with the stock tubbies THB mate. I had Hybrids and whilst they were good, they weren't anything special, and often they are prone to failure more so than stock, ask CW. My Hybrids cost £1100 excluding fitting and labour. They don't need to be mapped, straight swap IIRC, but of course a slight increase in power can be had from mapping them with a piggyback ECU or a standalone. The plus point is they can run higher boost (max around 1.3-1.4) with the right fuelling (min 550 injectors). I'd get yourself a pair of second hand low mileage jobbies that can be had for around £200 - £400 and go with those. Good luck and hope it all gets sorted. I think some people further up were thinking you said cambelt had snapped with all that about damaged valves and non-interference.
