How lardy ?

I've just been reading the latest edition of Jap Performance where they are focusing on GTI-R's. I was quite shocked to see the performance difference between the standard and lightweight versions of the car.

GTI-R.......................................GTI-R Ligthweight

220BHP...................................220BHP

200lb\ft...................................200lb\ft

1220Kg...................................1190Kg

134MPH (Max Spd)....................139MPH (Max Spd)

6.1s (0-60)...............................5.9s (0-60)

Does the 30kg really make that much difference to times and top speeds ? I thought top speed had more to do with aerodynamics and output of the engine than weight of the car. Yes I know weight can make a big difference, but can 30kg really make THAT sort of difference ? Or is it more Jap Perfomance mag BS.

Weight has no effect on top end assuming level ground and IMO 0.2 is so small as not too be worth considering.

30kgs is hardly worth making a song and dance about. If they had chopped 100kg of the weight that would be interesting.

That's exactly what i'm thinking. 30kg is nothing i would have thought it would have been in the order of 100's of Kg's to make much of a difference. But 0.2 is a considerable amount just for shedding 30Kg's.

Theres also massive differences between cars from the same production run. Leon has seen some mkiv engines that take more abuse than they ever should, and others which dont. It could be they got a well built stripped down version and a crappy normal version.

They are manufacturer figures.

I'd agree with JB here in that, generally, a difference of 0.2secs is far more likely to be just difference between the engines / front tyre grip etc.

However, if they are manufacturers figures then, being cynical, the manufacturer will want to actually SELL some of the Lightweight version, and if the performance difference between them is, essentially, nothing, then nobody would buy the lighter version.

Hence their official figures show it's worth buying the lighter version.

Power to weight difference between the two is just 3% (185bhp/tonne vs. 180 bhp/tonne).

Final point - (as Gav said) different weight on car's with identical power / aerodynamics / gearing makes NO difference at all to top speed.

Less weight will make the car *get to it's top speed* a little quicker, but ultimately both cars will reach exactly the same top speed.

But if i remember right i think the gti-r lightweight had reworked cams and ecu which would acount for the figures being different

Dont hold me to that its just what i seem to remember hearing somewhere
