Supragal
Posted on behalf of someone: I was hoping that someone could help me. I have recently bought a 1994 3.0 24v non Turbo Auto. I am very concerned that when I start the car from cold the engine races at 2000rpm ! Obviously this is not good for a cold engine as you can hear the cams rattle before the oil has chance to get round. The idle is fine when the engine has been running for a while and sits as it should around 750 to 800rpm. I was hoping that someone could tell me where the cold start sensor is so that I could either replace it or disconnect it completley. My local Toyota dealer wants a small fortune to have a look at the car and wants to perform a full diognostic check at a high price plus any parts. I bought a non Turbo model so as to be easier for me to work on. I do most of my servicing etc myself. Please can someone give me some ideas as I feel that these high revs at cold are going to ruine my engine. Many thanks John
Whitesupraboy2
everyone who owns a NA revs to around 2000 RPM when first started we dont know why but its normal! and once your oil pressure light gone off oil is flying about so no need to worry. Faye
Yep, have the same thing although I'm more the 1700 mark, its a b*gger when its cold out and you have to defrost the car. Makes you really popular
toyotasuprauk
Mines never goes quite that high but still about 1700 I believe. However it does seem to be the norm on the NA at least. I don't think there's anything to adjust its all done automatically. As long as you have the correct level of oil don't worry. Oh and don't take it to Toyota they will probably tell you it needs £2000 worth of work doing.
Ian C
I witnessed this with Digsy's car the other night. Maybe it's 2000rpm for auto, 1700 for manual? Whatever, it seems high but appears to be the norm. Can't believe you didn't do a search Rosie -Ian

Lazarus
Mine does it (1700-1800rpm), its normal and there is a reason, I just forget what it is!
Chris Wilson
High idle up speed on cold start is normal, on the N/A MKIV's, but rattling isn't. Are SURE it's cam noise and not crank / rod bearings?
