fri3ndly
Dunno about anyone else but I find our roads SHIT! I hope its not just me but every road surrounding me seems to have pot holes all over the place, wonky drains in the middle of the road and sticking out all over the place, uneven road and parts where they have dug the road up and filled it back in etc. Its a nightmare, and really doesnt feel good for my car! The coilover suspension squeaking away. It seems to me all our road tax is being spent on speed cameras, speed detectors (point?) and speed signs. It just annoys me so much when I have to drive over a million bumps on the way to work! Rant over
SMiFFAD
Why do we pay road tax..... Because if we dont our cars get crushed... thats about the only reason. They could save themselves some money on printing, and just call it "Tax" to be honest. Main reason for the state of the roads though isnt underspending, its over spending on monkeys. Contractors tend to be paid by the job, so they rush through the day doing a half arsed job, and get paid more than most of us could dream of. THEN it all has to be done again as its sunk.... Vicky
Was discussing this at the weekend! I travelled up to Scotland and the roads on the way were so much better than round here, noticed the difference as soon as we saw the ' you are now in kent ' sign

hogmaw
Road tax isn't gathered so the money can be spent on roads, just like the tax gathered on beer and fags isn't spent on making beer and fags.

Road tax is supposed to be spent on maintaining the road system surely? Beer and fag tax are supposed to spent on....not really sure. Probably some "health" scheme to make us stop using them. Whatever we do that makes life 'better off' for us, the government will tax it. Whether it is income tax, VAT, fuel, gambling, beer - you name it, if someone invents something or does something that people want, the government will want a piece of it too - by taxing it. I'm of a different opinion - I've paid my road tax so I'll damn well get my monies worth on the roads! Out of interest, where does the money for maintaining roads come from then? Is it part of council tax? And anything fun gets taxed. The government'll be slapping a tax on sleeping, sex and breathing next!

garethr
It's not "road tax", it's Vehicle Excise Duty...... and they stopped spending it all on the roads in 1937.
Guigsy
this is what appeared in my road a few months ago. when they opened up the hole a bit more there was enough space for the guy to stand in it. and even then it was up to his knee... fare doo's though. they came out a few hours after i reported it and had it fixed a few hours later (and it was a bank holiday!) hogmaw
Have you travelled anywhere in the world? You'd soon find out that our roads are amongst the best.
AJI
I think the question should be asked as to why people keep voting in labour !! And any other government that keeps creating bollox taxes and mis-spending our hard earnt money !
AndrewOW
The state of our roads could be better, but as we have so much traffic per mile they wear out so much quicker. I've driven on the Autobahn in Germany, and considering what speeds you can get up to, they are like patchwork quilts. Very dangerous. The best ones are the toll roads in France/Spain IMO. Shame I live here really I wonder if having toll roads here would do the same for us? Pay to use the nice roads etc?
