Lapping valves and rebuild tips?

Hi Guys and Gals

Not relating to my Supra's engine but I am sure the principles are the same. My brother and I are rebuilding an EVO 4 engine and trying to do as much of the work ourselves as we can.

One of these tasks is to lap the valves so they sit nice and snug but have never done anything like that before.

I'm not sure about how much pressure should be applied using the wooden stick thing, or how long to grind for, how long does it take for each valve?

Please pipe up if you have any engine rebuild tips for us as well :D

James

You shouldn't need to apply pressure the weight of the valve and the paste should do the job, lift and re-seat the valve frequently to redistribute the paste, as for how long, well its a case of looking at the seat, you should aim for a seat area of about 2mm if you still have any pock marks the valve or seat should have been re-cut/reground, clean everything well afterwards, and don't get any paste on the stems.
