Could you live without TV?

I was having a discussion with a few friends over the weekend, would having no TV or video at home bother you? I can honestly say I watch VERY little, and to make the jump to none at all would be painless. VERY few people joining in the conversation seemed to be able to even contemplate no TV without being near suicidal... Is it REALLY that big a thing in your lives?

As I live on my own, but have the larger room for the TV, I spend most of my time in the study on the PC, and rarely go into the front room on the TV, only if I'm bored of surfing for shit on the PC (Wikipedia is a great source of information :))....

To me, the license fee is a far inferior bill to my internet bill for the amount of useage and enjoyment I have...

I really enjoy films, so having to go to the cinema instead of sitting at home with a takeaway and a couple of beers would be hard.

I don't watch much TV at all though, don't have the time really. In my first apartment in Japan I only had the local channels so after watching some very, very odd programs on the first night and not understanding a word, I barely turned the thing on for 3 months.

Loosing the internet is completely different though, that's serious !!!

Depends on whether you mean no actual TV or just the concept of watching things. Seeing as you can get nearly anything off the tinternet and watch it on your PC screen that would make not having a TV fine with me. But if you mean there was no programs at all that is a different question as I do like some shows.

The only things I really watch any more are Las Vegas, Prison Break, Top gear, Scrubs and Heroes. I download all of these apart from Top Gear so for me it wouldn't be a problem. My little lad would be a bit miffed though as he loves scooby doo and Pocoyo :)

I have a TV but it's only used for DVD's and playing games. I stayed with a friend for a while a few years back and he couldn't afford a TV license so it was never plugged. I got used to it quite quickly and now I won't pay for one either as it isn't even tuned in. Haven't watched TV for 4 years now. I don't have enough time as it is without wasting it watching rubbish that I don't really give a toss about.

I use the online DVD rental to watch series I like such as Prison break, CSI etc. I have to wait longer than everybody else but then i get to watch it in one go rather 6 months.

I have Sky multiroom in my bedroom at home but have been without it for 3 months now due to some scaffolding round my dish.

To be honest I have missed watching Tv but I do have my laptop in my room and still watch Prison Break, Heroes, Top Gear etc etc on that.

I am looking forward to when the scaffolding comes down though.

I have kind've lived without it the past few months but would rather I didn't have to...

I can live without it, in fact I recently forgot how to turn the DVD player on, that was embarassing. I like my box sets of CSI, Stargate, House et al and the odd good scifi movie but normal telly? Isn't that just there to placate the masses :D

That's just reminded me Ian, I had a visit from the TV Licensing people the other week after 12 months of threatening letters. The woman turned up, I said I only use TV for watching DVD's and the external aeirel was cut off at the wall. she just checked the back of the telly and that was that. I was expecting more of a fight, or at least a more detailed inspection of the flat. She never checked the external aeriel at all.

I'm a bit of a film fan, so I wouldn't like to go without a TV. Don't get me wrong, I can live without a TV, I have gone for months without even switching it on.

I don't tend to watch normal telly, apart from Top Gear and documentaries on Sky (No, not documentaries about the sky) things like Frasier and Family guy which i love I just buy on DVD.

I also couldn't just get rid of mine, only for movies and xbox, I personally could quite happily live without sky\tv etc though.

Having said that, the grief it would cause if I got rid of Thomas the tank engine, night garden, tractor tom etc etc, my life would not be worth living !!!

Interesting replies! It seems the younger people have shifted to the `net and rented / downloaded films. The people I spoke with were 45 plus, and they were the ones who were still TV addicts, mainly soaps. I find the TV, on average, mind numbingly boring, politically biased, and blatantly fixed (can you possibly believe that Kyle chaps programme isn't staged by dysfunctionals desperate to be on TV at whatever cost to any pride they may have left?). The only reasons I'd miss it are the old films, some repeats of comedies and soaps, Upstairs Downstairs is a classic series and is on ITV3 at the weekends. The news I'd happily grab from the papers, and even I am spending more time amusing myself on the `Net, from being computer illiterate a few years ago.
