Sorry but i'm really crap when it comes to game consoles, whats Blue Ray & upscaler?

at the moment for games the 360 but the PS3 is a whole lot better and comes with Blu Ray and upscaler. Just give it time for the games to appear. Shouldn't be too long now

whats Blue Ray

From my understanding, Uber DVD :)

I'm tempted to buy an XBox 360, purely as some of my mates have them, and I'd love to play them online, but I've always been a Playstation fan, but the price atm's always put me off thinking about it...

Of course I need to get a new telly to fully appreciate either :(

Yep - higher quality DVD (and the upscaler means it can upscale ordinary DVDs so they look better).

I was pleasantly surprised by the blu-ray DVDs - although you'll need an HDTV. I'm not so sure the upscaler makes much difference though.

The problem is, Blu-ray and HD-DVD are the new betamax vs VHS war...

At the mo, there is no clear winner, so I've hedged my bets with a media PC for the moment.

True - and that would certainly stop me buying a Blu-ray or HD DVD player. But I kind of view it as a free bonus (although it's obviously not really free) with the games console, and if Blu-Ray dies then the console still plays games. I also suspect that by the time the Blu-Ray / HD DVD war is over we'll be well on the way to a PS4 anyway.

I was talking to a fella at work today about the Blu-Ray vs HD DVD issue... And my view was the target audience of higher quality films, and those who'd want to see the things worth seeing in better definition, and those who are more likely to have something to watch them on...

My view was that it's the young red-blooded males with disposeable incomes who'd want to see their favourite action films with the bangs and special effects with more definition (And porn :)), and they're most likely to have a big HD TV (Although my Dad's beaten me to getting a HD TV, but his is only a 26" - The lamer)

And those guys are more likely to be interested in a games console... As a lot of people on here are judging by the PS3/XBox360 threads (Myself included)...

So it makes sense for Sony to mix the 2 together, as when the PS3 was launched, Blu-Ray players were around the £1000 mark, so getting a player and the console together for half the price made sense :)...

I don't think the online capability of the PS3 will match the XBox 360, especially when the PC market progresses more onto Windows Vista as it inevitably (*sp) will, as they can both get onto 'Windows Live', however for pure gaming talent, I hope it will kick ass, as it always has done for me in the past...

I deffo saw a difference with the upscaler but I've got it running on 1080p so that might be why.

I bought both last week, felt like spoiling myself. I love Motorstorm and Heavenly Sword on PS3, and the fact that it's a Blu Ray player and will upscale my DVDS but the 360 is cheaper and has more games and better online play. If I had to choose just one it would be tough, but currently I think 360 can offer more immediate gaming satisfaction. Come the New Year though, I think PS3 will begin to really shine.

Errr - if it's a Blu-Ray disc, running on a PS3 at 1080p, displaying on a 1080p TV, then I'd hope that it's bypassing the upscaler altogether!

Bear in mind most newer HDTV's upscale, so whether you let the PS3 upscale or the TV upscale won't make muh difference (unless your TV has a particularly bad upscaler).

PS. also be aware that I believe there is a fault with the PS3 upscaling that means it won't upscale 720p games (ie. a lot of the current games) to 1080, so if your TV won't accept a 720p signal, it'll have to display at 480 instead! Yuck!

No, I'm talking about DVD's and you won't get much of a benefit from just a HDTV without a upscaling DVD player as the information sent from the standard DVD player is of lower quality.

Ah - sorry - you're right, of course - watching regular DVDs (which are 480p) on an HDTV you need upscaling of some sort. But it doesn't really matter where the upscaling is performed - either the DVD Player/PS3 or a upscaler built-in to the TV should do the job.

Especially if you buy a TV with a good scaler, like a Sony Bravia (although I wouldn't necessarily recommend a Sony due to their other disadvantages) or something, it will generally do a much better job than the iffy one Sony put in the PS3 - you're much better off letting the PS3 output at 480p and then let the TV upscale to its native display resolution (1080i/1080p/whatever).

To be honest I didn't think it worked like that. You can't send a 420 signal to the TV and expect it to upscale it to 1080p hence the Xbox 360 maximum output as 1080i. And now they are releasing the 360 elite with HDMI output for 1080p. As for DVD's the falling down point will always be the standard player as they are only required to produce a 420 signal, however the information on the DVD itself is capable of much higher bringing the need for the upscaler. It's kinda like the DTS on the sound system. If you have the a DTS compatible amp on it's own, you won't get the DTS sound. You'd need the DTS compatible player aswell.

It all depends on the TV - you need to check what signals your TV can cope with.

The TV will always display at its native resolution (otherwise you'd get a big black border around the picture). In fact, most "720p" televisions actually display 768 or 788 output lines, which means they do a little bit of scaling anyway!

When you plug a SD signal directly into an HDTV (this is why most HD TVs still accept 480 input), it is the TV that does the upscaling, not the source.

Videophiles rave about upscaling DVD players (and external upscalers too) because, by and large, the upscaler that gets put into these is better than the one in the TV, but don't necessarily write off the TV upscaler, as some of them look pretty good now, especially to an untrained eye like my own!

You're right about DTS - you can't take a 5:1 sound and convert it to DTS, because there's no way to "make up" the other channel - it has to be done when the content is created. But the analogy does not work with images - the whole point of an upscaler IS to "make up" the missing pixels by looking at the rest of the image and applying an algorithm that calculates the missing pixels (upscaled images tend to look better for animated content as the consistent colours are easier to recognise). The quality of an upscaler is largely defined by the quality of this algorithm.

Sorry I still disagree. I have 1080p bravia and if I played a standard DVD in a standard DVD player it will not upscale itself to a 1080 level and I doudbt it would even do 720p. If I use the upscaling DVD player the TV automatically switches it's resolution to 1080p. What you are saying is that things like SKY HD TV are not relevant as a new TVs will 'upscale' a standard SKY transmission up to this level.

I still cant decide and will probably wait 'till Xmas when the prices should drop and the bundles should get bigger (ps3)

:yeahthat: Already have an Xbox360 with HD player, also got a Wii - who cares if one is better than the other, just buy them all :p But I will wait until the PS3 is more sensibly priced and there are some decent games about for it.
