suprz_rz
AVG antivirus. Go to their website. there are two downloads you can do. The first is their full software that works only for a period of time before it stops, the second is fully free for ever. they just cut out some features, but the main anti virus bit is the same. http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
tDR
I prefer Avast! Antivirus, has never let me down yet. Get it from http://www.snapfiles.com freeware category. HTH, Brian.
far
thanks people I will check them out, so I want it to A - keep the nasties away from my lappy and B clear out any nasties which may be in the lappy will these do that ? tDR
Yes but I'd also recommend a triple pronged approach to getting rid of / protecting yourself from spyware / adware that causes ill system effects that antivirus software doesn't pick up on. Use Adaware, Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster - again, all freeware programs available from snapfiles. Most people may think this is OTT but in my opinion it is not, I use this approach to look after hundreds of machines I look after in Midlothian, Scotland with the exception we pay for Sophos Antivirus as it's generally accepted as the best. If you don't use this approach, especially in my job where kids are involved and visiting games websites and mp3 sites, you end up with undesireables such as 180search assistant, web rebates, shop at home select agent, toptext i lookup and eZula causing all kinds of system problems. HTH, Brian.

tDR
Firewalls (zonealarm) are a seperate issue and yes you should have one. The standard firewall in WinXP service pack 2 is fine for most peoples needs but other than that zonealarm is a very good product, if a little scarey for a novice to configure. Cheers, Brian.
