help, my drivetrain is poorly

when i'm sat in neutral and select first gear, just as i push it in gear i can hear and feel a dull thud sometimes and it almost feels like the car has been lightly nudged forwards.

it also clunks sometimes at low speeds like i need to go down a gear but if i change up it sorts it.

is there a joint in the propshaft that's worn or should i be looking somewhere else for the problem.

cheers guys

Chris, I had a dragging clutch caused by the last owner not changing the clutch fluid (good old Toyota service schedule  ), it was black and watery before I changed it. The fluid change transformed the clutch action and bite, but has had a detremental effect on the flywheel (I assume overheated from drag and has high spots, as it 'wobbles' sometimes at the bite point). Could this have gone towards causing the clonk in the drivetrain even though it's now fixed?

Yep, `fraid it's quite possibly so, but could also just be old age and poverty. Manuals can put much greater shock loads through the drive train, especially if driven "enthusiastically", hence things can wear out a lot sooner than on an auto.

The centre sliding coupling on the props are now showing signs of wear in the splines, especially on manuals. Add a bit of clutch drag and the sound you desribe is typical. The cure is a new propshaft assembly unless a reputable company can fit a new sliding joint for less?

At what sort of mileage is this becoming apparent?
