SupraTT2004
Can someone help me!! What do people think about buying a J-Spec TT Supra through a private sale and not through a trade. What should I be looking out for? Are there any threads on here describing what to look for etc, asI could not find any in the search. Thanks

Tom
Personally now I think I'd rather but private than trade, I think from trade people can 'cover certain things up', plus with a private you get to know the type of owner that has used it and I think you have more time to check the car. I've seen some really shabby supes from dealers, but none from private sales. Get someone on here that's local to you to check it over with you. Even though I've only had my supe a few weeks I'm sure I'd be a lot more confident about looking round another supe, as I feel I now know what to check! What should I be looking out for? people seem to have covered the things to look out for but here are some other things to remember 1) all dealer cars were privately owned prior to them getting them. When buying privately you have an opportunity to actually meet and chat to this owner and therefore possibly guage how the cars been treated by him/her. 2) All dealer cars will have a profit element, they are in business and will have the chat etc. Private sellers have to pitch their prices lower and can also often be haggled down more as they may need to sell quickly or want to minimise the time/hassle involved in selling the car (believe me no one wants to waste lots of their sat/sundays doing this). Private people tend not to be selling cars every day of their lives! and so are often far more open / honest about their cars. 3) Some dealer cars will have been p/x'd by private people aware they had issues. IMO more of the public are happy to land a trader with a heap, or a car that needs £'s of work, than sell it privately. How much is spent by the dealer correcting these is likely to vary considerably and none will like to take a loss so may be forced to be 'selective' in their repairs. 4) IMO a one owner from import car makes the best buy. Someone has already taken the plunge that you are considering taking and will have had all the uncertainty's and worries you are having. They will have paid a premium price for the 'dealer assurance' but on selling they will have to price the car below the dealer prices in order to attract any interest from a public wary of privates sales (thats you!) 5) Obviously caution is required and cars with major prob's just round the corner are sold privately and buyers are occasionally stung. BTW IMO you should be at least as cautious when checking out a dealer car. The way your original question was worded suggested to me that you were confident a dealer car would naturally be 'ok' whereas a private one should be treated with extra suspicion. Scarface GTti
I bought one off this board which was handy. This is because you can look at the history of their posts and see what questions they`ve asked people. If they`ve asked someone where the best place is to get their car straightened then you know to avoid. What isn`t so handy is to do what i did and not realise this valuable feature until i had bought the car, to then find out that the person that sold it you were talking from the rectum. Cost me a bit of money that:mad: But yes, definately something to consider.
