Grazer
Let me start by saying the brakes are one part of the car that I still no nothing about (I'm slowly learning about the rest!) I've got a loud noise coming from the rear drivers side - I'm assuming it's the brakes as it dissapears on braking. It's like a metallic squeek/rattle that gets faster as I accelarate. Handling is terrible at the moment as the space saver is on the other side (noise was there before). I realize this is fairly non-specific, but there's no chance of me getting to a garage for a few days, so is there anything I can have a look at myself? Soonto_HAS_soop
Sounds like it could be a binding brake, but I would not suggests getting "an idiot" to check your brakes. They are probably something you should get a professional to inspect. Find someone that does a free inspection, maybe Halfrauds or Kwik Fit do a free brake inspection. Then get a Professional to do the work.
Digsy
I recently had a squeak / scraping noise from one of the rear brakes. I wouldn't have described it as "loud" but id did dissappear on braking and it did get faster as I accellerated. It was nothing more sinister than the wear indicator on the pad. New pads = no noise. Funnily enough, when I did have a binding brake it didn't make any noise at all. It just got very very hot!

That sounds identical - fingers crossed. New steering wheel & speakers this month = barely enough cash for pads never mind anything else!! Red
yeah - It will be the 'your brake pads are worn out' indicator. It had me worried too when it happened to me. New pads will solve this!
merckx
Do the rear brakes have a worn out indicator, normally just on the front? Worth checking the rear pads and the handbrake shoes.
Red
it was the rears on mine, so they do have the warner on the rears. its a small strip of metal - if it is squealing, you will probably be able to see where it is rubbing on the disc. Digsy
Yep, original equipment pads have indicators all round. Set frighteningly close to the bare metal (about 2mm). Rears are about £40 per pair from Toyota.
