BEERSHZ
I have today recieved a letter from DVLA saying i have to pay a fine for an untaxed vehicle that i scrapped 4 years ago.... I know i sorned it then notified them i scrapped it, on ringing them they say the sorn ran out 31st aug 2007!!!!! and they under no obligation to send out reminders. i have to pay 40 quid fine and back tax of 17 quid odd. I had a clear out and threw all the paperwork out a while ago so have no records, i know i have never recieved a reminder to sorn again or anything in all this time. So would you argue this or just pay it? Seems strange they never queried why it wasnt taxed before now.

robin
I have heard of this sort of thing happening before. I once sold a car to someone and let them post the v5c off. Ended up getting a parking ticket for the car a year later. Luckily I still knew them and was able to get it all sorted. Did you ever get a notification from the DVLA that they recorded it as scrapped or sold? Usually it says something along the lines of thank you for informing us this vehicle has been scrapped etc.
BEERSHZ
yes i remember i got the notification and i remember throwing it all away at begining of this year. I never saw it scrapped just put on the lorry and taken away. But i did get it signed and sent off to say it was scrapped then got the letter from dvla confirming updated details. I suppose ill have to pay as i no longer have the records. Does anyone keep records for that long?, just another goverment money making scam i suppose. Stuff like this really pi**es me off
Scoboblio
I had a penalty notice for failing to tax a car that I sold about 6 months previously. I didn't send off any notification, just sent a copy of the letter back with a cover note saying I'd sent off the appropriate form when I'd sold the car, and the address of who I sold it to. IMO don't pay it, whatever's happened isn't your fault.
AlexJames
I wouldnt pay it IMO, I hate the DVLA for stuff like that, they make mistakes alot!!! I have had to move number plates from 3 differnt cars as I sold 1 and moved on, the amount of times mistakes were made on their part was stupid!!! ivan
Just write back to them saying that the car was scrapped, that you informed them at the time, that you received an acknowledgement from them afterwards and have no intention of paying the charges. Don't mention the fact that you threw your copy out.
Ric
did you send the part of the logbook off which says the car had been scrapped? if not, you dont have a choice ull have to pay it.
ChrisB
Exactly what ivan said, ive had the same before, just phoned them and said that i had scrapped the car a long time ago and they apologised and said to ignore the letter, just a mistake on their part. Jake
£17 quid backdated tax? Is that all? That's 'cos they seem to think the SORN ran out in August this year, whereas Beershz reckons he scrapped it years ago. I'm sure he didn't keep renewing the SORN after he scrapped the car. I'm sure he didn't keep renewing the SORN Do you 2 work for the DVLA? I spotted from her details on the first post she appears to be a lady However, I wouldn't pay it either, if their records are so great they can prosecute you, they must have records of everything sent to you, including the 'Thanks for letting us know' letter...
