This is more for the opion of web designers out there, i know some of you are...

Ok, with out me knowing the high and mighties at work have commisioned a company to do a new website for us.

These people have come up with this:

http://www.bessogroupltd.co.uk/

Where they have basicly ripped off tons of my code from the old work website and just applied it to a template.

And they are charging us £5k for this because its taken them 4 months to do!!!

The big question is, like me, do you think they are totally ripping us off? Because I really cant see anything that would take more than a few days to really create.

yeh the old one had some CSS but not as much as that, but the old one i did back in 2003 so have learnt a lot since then.

But basicly all they have done is created 1 template which is used for everypage, then copied everything from the old one into new pages. 4 months work!!!!!!!!!!! hahahahaha

Every one has got their own rates, but to be honest I'd just had a through look threw the web site and theres nothing too labour intensive about that. Very straight forward HTML code with hyperlinks to no more than 20 pages. The layout and text editing could have taken a week, but no more. So thats 40 hours to knock this up. To bill you £5,000 over 4 months. that means (40 hr in a week * 16 weeks (4 months) / £5k = £7.81 phr) which is the going rate. I think some one some where is over billing you for this work.

I'd go back and tell them its only a weeks worth of work, and you'll pay them for a week. If they refuse, then say you want SQL back end Customer database, with a Flash front end for that money.

They saw u coming..............:D

A week? As Edd says it's basically the same page template for each page and some text copy and pasted. Even if they had to design that template from scratch (which I doubt, it'll just be a standard one that they modify), I can't see it taking anyone that long.

Design concepts and approval take time.

Customer meetings take time.

Finalisation, making final changes, little fixes etc all add up to a surprising amount of time.

Plus general business overheads etc which people tend to forget.

Then of course you'd like to actually make some profit.

I would have said this is a three day job in total at £350/day.

mate you could even have done that in flash

Why would you do a regular site like this in Flash?

Flash takes three times as long to do anything in, doesn't get index by search engines, relies on a plug, won't be viewable across as many devices etc.etc.

Flash has its place and features, but not often in the business world.
