Guest FKADizzmystar
if any1 can tell me the problem you are god. ok when i turn my key ON i hear all these clicking noises under the hood and then i try and start it, it allmost clicks over then it doesnt. ive check the battery, the fuel pump relay, fuses, starter relays and all that good stuff. ive ruled out the starter motor because the car wants to start. so im thinking its the fuel filter/fuel pressure problem somewhere. it was the first time i put one of those type of filters on (being the stock standard one) a car and maybe ive done it wrong and im starving the engine of fuel or its not getting enough pressure somewhere. well any help would be great, im not touching anymore till i get some ideas. ive read most of the post from other guys on this web site that have had similar probs, that why ive tryed half the stuff above. cheers

Kranz
Its your starter mate. The contacts are corroded/damaged. Either that or you need a new battery but your old one is holding enough charge to make it seem like its ok (shows full voltage but can deliver no current). Get the starter out & examine the contacts. There's a how to for replacing the starter contacts & a rebuyild kit available IIRC. Seems like there's a lot of this about http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=125788
Ian W
if it clicks, i'd bet the starter too. is the engine actually turning over as well as clicking or is it clicking before turning over?

Scooter
on a TT it could be the crank position sensor?
Alex
If it clicks it's usually the battery...but you say you've "CHECKED" it.... What does checked mean?
adam bell
put his tounge on it. come on we have all tried the battery on a tounge lol
snake
if your 100% sure the battery is ok it sounds like the starter .i had the same problem as you have described it when on for a few months sometimes it would start up at other times it would click like the solanoid was sticking . Scooter
ive ruled out the starter motor because the car wants to start. i took this to mean its turning over? may be wrong its not altogether clear..........
redtwinturbo
I had almost exactly the same problem, battery seemed to be ok, car would unlock all lights would come on and everything but when you tried to start all that happened was a loud "click" sound (solenoid on starter motor activating) but nothing else would happen. Changed the battery and hey presto problem solved
T2 MSW
been down this route with mine, speak to Jezz, clicky solanoid syndrom! bet the car has done 50-60k its common issue with the starter motor. About £40 for a new one and a few hours to fit simply because the two bolts are a PITA to get at! Its the solanoid on the starter motor sounds exactly the same issue as I had, changed the battery same, changed the crank position sensor with a temp one to test it - same issue. Changed the starter motor - problem fixed. Is it really sporadic when it happens or is it every time?
dangerous brain
Look here http://mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=105408&highlight=seized+alternator&page=10 Looks like this can also cause a lack of starting ability if it can stop an engine thats moving. I've recently heard of a few people in the aristo world with older engines hearing noises that turn out to be alternator bearings.
Guest FKADizzmystar
the battery looks new water levels are fine and i left it to charge over night and then trying it at "full" charge in the morning so im guessing the battery is ok. and with the starter motor it can acually sound like its almost starting the car but be brocken at the same time? Whitesupraboy2
Do you have a friend who will unplug his good battery for you to test with if you dont want to buy one? I had same symptoms, seemed to want to start but wouldnt and it was that the battery didnt have enough power. New battery and all fine. Chris Wilson
It's the starter contacts INSIDE the starter solenoid, I'll bet you. So common I can do them blindfolded now
T2 MSW
you can buy refurb kits can you not Chris? I have my old starter motor sat in the garage! May get it reconditioned and flog it!

Jake
This could be MASSIVE! I'm on the phone to SkySports now to see if they're interested. It'll be better than some of the shite they show.

I keep the repair parts in stock at all times, I do loads these days, I reckon people should consider having the starter refreshed at a major service, if it's done over 80,000 miles, say.
