Doug
Just been talking to a few people that I was at the strip with yesterday and they said there was a lot of white smoke coming out the car in low gears. Not having seen another Supra doing a 1/4 mile I don't know if this is normal. Are my turbos on the way out? Is there somewhere I can get it checked? I haven't noticed anything when just driving on the street.
Barry
White usually means water. Which usually means head gasket. especially if its coming out the exhaust. You driving a MKIII or IV.?
Doug
Eeep! I'm driving a MkIV 96 J-Spec. Is there something I should be looking for under normal driving? More importantly would this sort of thing be covered under warranty. I've not even had the thing a month!
FaithStalker
just before you get a heart attack, was the engine totally warmed up? was it a kinda damp day? do you have cats in or out..? the cats can give off a LOT of steam / white smoke out the back.... wouldnt the head-gasket mean smoke ALL the time in every gear? not just low ? Doug
It was a warm dry day (well it's all relative for England:rolleyes: ) the car is totally standard, um, not sure about temp - coolant temp was half on the guage and the car was standing running for a while in the queue waiting to run. Ian C
An early head gasket failure would only show up under moments of duress for the engine. Such as, I'm sorry to say, drag strip launches. Had the car been giving a good thraping since you bought it? -Ian
Doug
Living in South London there aren't really many areas where you can go all out, I haven't really gone all out till yesterday and there hasn't been anyone behind me to say what's going on. Are there any owners in the vicinity that could help me out?
Ian C
I'm just wondering if the white smoke was from some sort of water buildup from the car just kicking around the dealer's forecourt, and only now has it been burnt off. I think you'll have to keep an eye on the occurences of the white smoke and the coolant levels. It's too early to make a judgement. And cross those fingers -Ian
Doug
Thanks for all the help guys, I've not seen anything in my mirrors when flooring it but will keep an eye on everything just in case.
Adam W
If you start losing coolant from your expansion tank then there is a problem, otherwise it's nothing to worry about.

Patrick_Devlin
I've noticed that after a 10-20 mile motorway run that there is some white smoke/steam coming from the engine bay and under the frnt half of the car... could this be the Cats? It only happens after a long high speed run, and once its cooled its fine...
Guest Martin F
Sounds like oil burning off from somewhere.
Patrick_Devlin
Hmmm... I've checked all the oil levels and there are no visible leaks. Might have to be a trip to the garage with fingers crossed and warranty in hand!!!

Matt Harwood
I'm in Maidstone, about 25 minutes away. I could meet you somewhere if you like and follow you. A2 has some nice open bits without speed cameras:D Until you get to my neck of the woods with all the road works:mad:
Doug
Guys, Sorry to resurrect this thread but I now have a video clip of the car doing it's smoke thang on the strip. http://www.puntoabarth.co.uk/movies/dougs_supra_vs_supra.mpg I'm the black one on the left. So, is this normal?
Terminator
A possible cause of white smoke is a faulty turbo charger seal:(
Barry
White smoke is not usually smoke, but steam, indicating that the head gasket is on its way out. If the oil seals in the turbo were going you would get blueish smoke.
Doug
This only sems to happen when overdrive is off, I had Matt Harwood follow me and it wouldn't do it. Is there something I can easily check to see what's going on or would it be best to take it back to JIC to see what they say?

HedgehogSandwich adi
Looking at the video that looks like steam (im not a technical bloke, but steam dissapears very quickly after ejection, oil smoke doesnt). adi
