40gb PS3 anyone?

This PlayStation 3 model does NOT feature:

Backwards Compatibility with PS2 Games

Memory Stick Card Readers

SACD Playback

Ethernet Cable

4 USB Ports, this model features 2.

Only thing in the above would be playing PS2 games, but I expect that could be hacked back in sooner or later as it's software emulation for us now anyway isn't it? Probably a BIOS flash.

IGN news - http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/825/825213p1.html

What's more, Sony is also slashing the cost of the 60GB PS3 down to 349 GBP.

The lower capacity hard drive aside, the entry level 40GB PS3 only has two USB ports (compared to the usual four), the multi-memory card port has been removed and the machine will not be backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles, because Sony reckons there has been "reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3".

In addition to the new model, Sony is replacing the existing Starter Pack with a new Value Pack, priced 349 GBP, for which you get a 60GB PS3, a SIXAXIS controller and two first-party titles - although exactly what games will be on offer has yet to be confirmed.

I knew I was right to wait a while to buy. :)

Reckon the value pack might be the way forward, though every chance the two games will be shite.

Also worthy of note is the fact that all 360s now come with HDMI, not just the Elite, which suddenly makes it look very expensive.

Does anyone know why the drives are limited in size? Surely Sony ahven't developed a new type of hdd?

Don't they just use a normal 2.5" or 3.5" disk?

I was reading that you can actually fit any size drive you like as long as it's the right type (obviously) - there are instructions in the PS3 owners manual and fitting a larger drive yourself won't actually invalidate the warranty.
