another IT question - desktop machines with dual screen outputs

Nearly finished with my IT questions...

Im now trying to find a desktop machine that has dual screen outputs as standard, or somebody that can build one with dual screen in it.

Doesnt need to be ultra powerful, just a normal office type machine that will be running Word, excel etc and in the second screen it will be running a VNC session to another machine to display whats happening on that one.

So, any suggestions?

JB

Isn't it justt he graphics card that does this for you... i.e. 2 monitor ports? The problem is then making sure that the graphics card fits your machine.

I have it on my computer but dont even use it tbh.

I thought that all dual output graphics cards could do 2 screens simultaniously?? (looks like there's an echo in here!)

Having said that I know at work we have some Matrox cards that are specifically for driving multiple screens....

most video cards will do dual screen. Some will have a DVI and a Analogue port, others will have dual DVI. I would try and get a Dual DVI. But just make sure your monitors support DVI. Another option is the Matrox Dual and Tripple HEad2Go. These wil take a single graphics head and allow you to run 2 or 3 screens. A basic Radeon 9200 Has dual screen support and cost sub £30.

Agree with the above - we have some really cheap/old GFX cards that are DVI, but come with a DVI cable which splits into two, for 2 monitors. Not quite sure how this works, as it doesn't just duplicate the monitors, but allows for extended desktop across both screens. Works nicely.

Hi Branners,

As the others have suggested, there is no need to buy a new PC - just grab a nice cheap entry level video card with dual outputs. Then you can configure windows to output to both monitors (Via control panel/Display settings) and you can have them split as you like - 2 desktops, one big desktop, etc.

As a cheapy, perhaps something like an ATI Radeon X1550. If both monitors are just VGA and don't have DVI connectors, just buy a couple of DVI->VGA converters and you are all set to go.

Dual screen output either buy a high-end card with DVI + Vga / HDMI output...

Or buy two reasonable priced PCI cards and have two separte DVI/VGA.

At my work I've got a 4 x 21' monitor setup, just got a bog-standard corporate Dell with 4 graphic cards in.

It's always fun trying to find the mouse pointer.
