StuartW
Hi I have a good transmission from my 94 SZR N/A covered 64,700KMS STD & 600 miles with 360BHP i have converted to 6 speed. All parts to convert from an auto as i scrapped the donar car, Gearbox Mounts Shift lever Rubber coupling Clutch pedal/box Hydrolic hard pipe Slave cylinder, flexi hoses 5 speed ECU Propshaft All nuts bolts You will need to buy a clutch kit and the flywheel will need a skim to be on the safe side The diff has sold but an auto diff is compatible with/without LSD Depending on clutch this transmission will take 350-400HP constant Driveshafts are compatible too. Will sell box on its own if price is right:D I will close the "Auction" Tuesday (9th) @20.00 Paypal is 4% and carriage is £50. Collection is free Cheers Knightrider 07788774991
dangerous brain
I take it that its not cheaper to uprate the 5 speed than change it for a 6 speed?
StuartW
I take it that its not cheaper to uprate the 5 speed than change it for a 6 speed? I have a 6 speed box on its own for sale on this forum currently bidding @ £1100! The conversion costs £2500 and you will have to wait up to 2 years to find one....A new 6 speed box on its own from Toyota retails @ £5300 Plus VAT ALL 5 speed parts are different to 6 speed from flywheel back to driveshafts:blink: inc slave cyl too. dangerous brain
Ah OK I made an assumption here. I assumed this kit was for sale because it was leftover stuff when you converted from 5 speed to 6 speed manual. What I mean is I was assuming that you changed from this 5 speed to a 6 speed because you had upped your power beyond the 5 speeds abilities and my question was, is it cheaper to convert to a 6 speed than uprating the 5 speed box to take more power? I am very much aware of how much a 6 speed conversion is and if I could get away with a five speed box the cost would be so much lower. I am running 500 ish horses though so the box would need uprating especially as my car is a good 150 kg heavier than yours.

Dont know about uprating 5 speed but my weakest link was the clutch, It just kept slipping under load. I had a Techniclutch 450BHP rated fast road cluth cost £180 (Absolutely rubbish by the way) slipped from day 1 to failure at 500miles or so, Only ran 0.4 bar boost too.... In heinseight should have bought RPS MAx for about £450 Rated to 550BHP, Speak to Michel Lane or Kevin at MVP for this. I have heard of the W58 reguarly taking 500+BHP aparantely what happens is when they do go they start to become hard to engage 1st gear, So they do not suddenly blow up... I went straight up to 600BHP+ so decided the only way to go was bigger flywheel and 6 speed TT style 900+ BHP capable:D Cost me over £4K so far to fit myself:( Knightrider

JustGav
It is R154 that is the stronger 5spd, the W58 is okay up until 400ish... HOWEVER it is the torque rush that kills the box, not the bhp.

PJ
So basically this conversion would be fine on a BPU'd car, but much more than that and it's going to let go???

HOWEVER it is the torque rush that kills the box, not the bhp.The curious thing is that the Aussies use the W boxes behind their V8s. According to the Dellow Automotive catalogue: Type 3: Toyota all alloy oval case 5 speed has 9 bolts and 2 dowels holding the original bellhousing to the box and the diameter of the front shaft is 29mm with 21 splines and is 160mm long. This box is used in most of our V8 swaps. The output shaft has 21 splines. Toyota calls these their – W55, W57, W58, W59 depending on their internal ratio. Hmmm, any more info on supportable power figures? The other thing to remember is the V8 would put even torque through the box... whereas a turbo has a sudden jump which could be enough to snap something.. Jezz
OK in all seriousness Jezz how much to convert my aristo with this box assuming the price tag of the kit sits around the £300-400 bracket? I'm actually looking at this as we've just got a burned out Supra in, but the 6 speed box and prop etc is all good, so i just need the pedals etc. That would be your 6 speed conversion sir. Thought Ebay was for auctions, not forum for sale section? Or is this now the forum auction section?
