Buying glasses online - any experience?

Have any of you fine people dealt with any of the online glasses sellers?

I have a couple of pairs I want reglazing and also want to buy a new pair, shop prices are much higher so I'm tempted to give it a go.

At the end of the day you pick a style and hand over a prescription, it's not a great deal different to the shops, some even offer you the ability to hire the frames first to try them on.

So if you've done this already please let me have some feedback and details of who you used :)

I have a small list of potential places:

http://www.spex4less.com

http://www.glasses2you.co.uk

http://www.directspecs.co.uk

http://www.glassesuk.com

http://www.glassescomplete.co.uk

http://www.glassesdirect.co.uk

http://www.speckyfoureyes.com

Any others I should be aware of?

As you have not had any replies to your thread I thought I would try and help you a little...

I bought my current pair on http://www.39dollarglasses.com/

Got single vision, high index glasses pretty much the same as my old, and somewhat expensive Calvin Klein ones. If you go to the site I think they were the "Hudson" ones. Been very happy indeed with the glasses. The black coating on the frames themselves came off within a few weeks, which I was initially annoyed with, but actually the raw metal underneath is quite a cool gun-metal colour! The lenses themselves are the best lenses I've ever had - really thin, excellent anti-reflective coating, and they have resisted scratches longer than any lens I ever bought in the UK (about 3 years old now and virtually unscratched). Oh and about £80 I think in total including shipping and import duty - so way cheaper that you'd get in an optician - particularly with the super high-index (1.67) lenses and all the coatings.

They also do a "use your own frame" thing where you post them your current frame for re-glazing.

Anyway - can definitely recommend, and I'll probably be getting my next pair from them.

These sort of places are ok on low prescription sv lenses but I think Kopite will agree that measuring up yourself for varifocal/high prescription lenses is asking for trouble. They are obviously very cheap quality frames, but I can see the attraction as the prices are great compared to an opticians who obviously have higher overheads.
