sykick
Hi all, Can anyone give me some advice, I'm tring to center my steering wheel. When the wheels are straight it is about 10 degrees to the left, which is really bugging me. If I take the steering wheel off there is a large 19mm nut in the center of the column, do I slacken this off to center the wheel mount? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? rgds, Marcus
GavinL
Take it too your local tyre place and get them too centre the wheel.

Steve W
Gavin's right, you EITHER use the steering wheel nut/spindle, OR, if it 'CAN'T' be altered that way (or the 'notches' don't give fine enough adjustments) the only way is by EQUALLY adjusting the track-rods both sides - and PREFERABLY retracking after just to make sure it's 'true'. { and, if the track-rods are seized it can mean oxy-acetylene-TIME } { although on Supras the tracking is probably checked/adjusted enough times to keep them 'free' - unlike a rep-mobile }
Alex
You have a 300hp car...is it worth skimping on this sort of thing?? If you get it down to a bodyshop they should be able to do a full setup for you. Tracking, Castor, camber, toe in and out - I believe are all adjustable
Gordon F
The correct procedure for tracking is: 1. Centre the rack 2. Make sure the wheel is centred 3. Adjust tracking on each side Taking the wheel off and turning it on the splines is not a form of adjustment unless it has been removed before and replaced incorrectly.(BTW - anyone know how many splines on the steering column?). If , when the rack is centred, the wheel is not straight, then turn it at the steering column u/j. Then adjust the left and right track rods for the correct toe setting on each side. Hope this helps
Terminator
One of my local tyre dealers does this every time they do the tracking. The have a clamp that they use to hold the steering wheel perfectly straight while they line up the wheels. Other places may just ask you to hold the wheel. Some places are very H&S fussy and won't let you in the car while they work on it. If the garage do not hold the wheel in some way, find one that will.
