jaymdee Posted October 2, 2007 Share Posted October 2, 2007 At the start of August I joined the Fitness First gym in Bath to lose a few excess pounds and get fitter, with the aim to run the Bath half marathon next year. To start with, a 2km run was a struggle, which I raised to 5km and last night I was really pleased to run 10km in 58:30. Just need to double that now for a decent half marathon time I've also lost nearly a stone and 3 inches off my waist, which is a bugger, cos all my 32" trousers are now way too big!! I can't say I'm running further, as my knee won't let me run on the treader (I do a 6.0kmh 'walk' up a gradient I hit up 1.0 every 2 minutes for 10 minutes for a warm up and that's the most my knee will take, but if I start running it dies instantly)... But I've already increased the weights I work on on the resistance machines by 10kg, and I can do 4 sets instead of 3 on the free weights... As someone who hasn't done any form of exercise for way too long, I'm noticing the benefits already, I haven't lost any 'size', but I put that down to being horrifically unfit in the first place (Shame as I used to race mountain bikes around here )... Ian C Posted October 3, 2007 Share Posted October 3, 2007 Good stuff I've been into running and generally getting fitter since my 'incident' nearly two years ago now and I've entered into my first real competition in december - a half marathon lol I'm up to 10.4 miles now (1hr 54m) and once my legs have healed I'll try and do it again Got 2 months to get just under another 3 miles out of them, and they know who's boss so it damn well will happen I'm deffo distance and not speed orientated, my steady plod is about 5.6mph, but then there is a lot of me to move around! And don't give me none of that "but you only need take two strides" nonsense, it so doesn't work like that My weight has remained fairly constant at about 104kg (230 pounds) but the fat layer is being replaced by Thighs of Iron -Ian Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I managed to get to level 10 in the weeks before the test..... nearly died though! I found a nice fitness test on the running machine in the gym called the PEB test. Its 2.4km on a slight incline. After a few weeks I had it down to 9 minutes at a speed of 16.5 Kph (just over 10 mph). After completing it it says I have scored 98%.... bonus! I joined the gym last October, as my girlfriend wanted me to do the Great North Run with her this year. So I was running at the gym, never much more than 6/7Km, and doing that about 3times a week. Didn't see any great weight loss, but felt generally fitter. Once it got to within 14weeks of the Great North Run I started working a lot harder, following a training program, and lost about a stone, down to about 12.5st. Just ran the Great North Run on Sunday (having never run more than 8miles until that day) in 1hour 47mins and 43seconds. I've been eating like a fat b*stard since though! I walked into Bath today and then up to the University and then back home. Started going twice a week though and it got much easier after 3 months. Then didn't go for a month and went to Kung Fu last week, and nearly died during the warm up.... Want to start cycling to work, but the missus keeps giving excuses so I end up driving her in to work, and I'm not gonna bother driving home to get the bike so I haven't been doing it - hopefully soon though.
