probrox
I got in the car yesterday morning and turned the key but nothing happened, no clicking, just silence. Hadn't driven for a few days so i figured maybe the alarm had drained the battery. Hooked it up to my girlfriends car but it still did nothing. Got in the car later on and it started fine. Later last night had the same problem again. Is this likely to be the starter motor? If so does anyone know where i can get a new one fairly cheap? Muffleman
When you turned the key and it didn't start, did the dashboard lights dim at all ?
probrox
No, not at all. Had been having problems with the alarm/immobiliser a few days ago, but that seems to be fine now. Just wont start. Tried again this morning, nothing happened when i turned the key the first 3 times, then on the 4th, started no problem.
Marty
Doesnt sound like starter motor. More like an engine immobiliser problem, or bad contacts on the starter motor circuit on your ignition barrel

probrox
The immobiliser on the car doesn't usually stop the starter motor from trying. If the immobiliser isn't deactivated the starter just keeps trying but the engine wont fire.

If the immobiliser isn't deactivated the starter just keeps trying but the engine wont fire. That's not how it should work. What should happen is that it doesn't even attempt to try and start the car... a bit like it sounds like is happening now.
probrox
The alarm/immobiliser is a clifford 650. When i bought the car a few weeks ago the bloke i bought it from told me that if the battery light was not showing the immobiliser was on. In this instance the car tries to start but will not fire. When deactivated the car normally starts fine. Does anyone know if this alarm has an immobiliser that will stop the car from trying as well? cheekymonkey
I have a Concept 300, which is similar. When the car is "immobilised" then yes, you turn the key, and nothing happens, no starter motor sound or anything. Worth noting that if you get in the car but don't actually start it straight away, then the immobiliser gets put back on after about 30 or 60 seconds. Maybe that's what is happening to you? Next time this happens, press the "unlock" button on the Clifford Fob while the keys are still in the ignition, and try again. Might also be worth downloading the manual for your alarm, or just reading it. They have a lot of features (too many!) Cheers James
T2 MSW
Yes the 650 has an immobilliser that will give exatly these symptoms when its armed. When it occurs if you arm the alarm and then disarm it and then try straight away does it then fire? The immobilliser activates if the key is not put in the ignition in about 20-30 seconds. edit - Doh beaten too it!
cheekymonkey
When it occurs if you arm the alarm and then disarm it and then try straight away does it then fire? Yep, that, or just pressing the unlock button once *while the key is still in the ignition* is easier. You should hear a relay click when you do this (well, I do) edit - Doh beaten too it!
