Ark
So, according to the news, today the minimum age for buying tobacco has gone up to 18. Snuck that one in, didn't they. I heard absolutely nothing about it until today.

ManwithSupra
I personaly think its a good idea that they have increased the age - perhaps i am just getting old
RedM
Now all we need is the driving age raised to 21 and we can get 1000s of cars of the road. It'll improve the environment and at the same reduce congestion. Vote for me. I'm great.
Pete
Snuck that one in, didn't they. I heard absolutely nothing about it until today. They've been criticised for not advertising it enough and I'm not surprised. I found out last night after seeing signs in the local Spar type shop. I'd be pretty peed off if I were that age and smoking. Still, the vending machine guys are going to have a great time of it as it's not illegal to actually attempt to buy them, just to sell them! redtwinturbo
Great idea, although I suppose all the older kids will just buy it for the younger kids but its a step in the right direction. This also is definatley now in place, I have seen posters advertising this change over the last couple of months.
Scoboblio
I've seen a few posters advertising it. It's not illegal for 16 and 17 year olds to smoke, just to buy them (the government didn't want to criminalise all those teenagers).
Supragal
I've seen a few signs around etc but they have kept it a bit quiet!!! Good, about time.
Charlotte
I personally have more of an objection to teenagers binge drinking (because obviously I never was one). They should raise the alcohol age.

No, it's illegal to SELL them to anyone under 18, not for them to buy them.
Chiefgroover
Smoking and drinking, while I did it too young, i think the age for both should be 21 to give kids a chance to learn to live a life without them before using them as a crutch at an early age. neil tt
They should ban smoking altogether:)
markjodrell
Just another example of this pathectic nanny government telling us what we should or shouldnt do. What worries me is when they have finished bullying and discriminating against smokers what or who will there next target be..//:(:( Oh and before anyone asks , I am a NON smoker. Class One
I think it's a bit lame really. A veiled attempt at trying to stop younger teenagers from becoming smokers. It won't stop them at all. If they want to do something really effective, how about raising the price of a pack of 20 to £10 and use that as an offset to lower the fuel duty price increase that was also snuck in today. steb9780
Yep I watched a lad who was taller than me get knocked back for his coffin nails this afternoon. You know how it went: "ten l&b coffin nails please" "hmmm have you some ID love" "no why would I need ID, I'm 17" "sorry love but it's 18 to buy tobacco now" "f@*%ing stupid b1£ch" Me and my mate were in stitches

Totally agree - isn't amazing how the government will be losing money from cigerette sales, so they punish drivers by putting up fuel prices to compensate. hoff
Its harsh for those who have been smoking for a while. trust me giving up is very hard and knowing you cant get hold of one will make it worse. Im 26 and have been smoking for about 10 years. I wish I never started. If this had happened when i was that age i would have been really pissed off to start but thankfull in the long run. Pete
to lower the fuel duty price increase that was also snuck in today. That's why I paid 99.9p again today is it?! I can't believe they've had the balls to raise petrol duty.
VELOCITY
They probably had to raise it to cover all the tobacco duty they will loose from reduced sales!!
Class One
Its harsh for those who have been smoking for a while. trust me giving up is very hard and knowing you cant get hold of one will make it worse. Im 26 and have been smoking for about 10 years. I wish I never started. If this had happened when i was that age i would have been really pissed off to start but thankfull in the long run. I gave up over 3 years ago. I started when I was 10, when my parents split up and divorced. My evil older brother tempted me. God I remember my 1st cigarette, it was foul. I can't beleive that by 16 I was smoking 20 a day and by the time I was 20, I was smoking 40 a day. Smoking took my mothers life at the age of 57, after a 12 year battle against emphysema. Even then, that wasn't enough to make me stop, not straight away anyway. Eight months after her death I just decided that I was wasting my life, and realised that I would end up the same way. If you had asked any of my family or my friends back then they would have said that I would never have stopped. I went to my Doctors asked for help, and with a lot of willpower I stopped. I realised that just by having one, the only person I was cheating was me. Haven't had one since. If only I had said no way back then. So for anyone wanting to give up, you can do it, you've just got to admit to yourself first that you want to. The rest is then upto you. Konrad
I gave up smoking after 15 years of around 25-30/day. Not a big deal really, I just thought it would be funny to check if i can stop anytime I want and well, I just stopped Over a year without cigarette and no difference really except that I'm saving fortune by not buying them and my clothes smell nice
