They are single turbo, not twin.

A revision 3 onwards MR2 Turbo is a very quick little car (October '93 onwards) - like for like in standard trim they are quicker than a Supra TT. Both BPU, the Supra TT is the quicker car.

Cheers,

Brian.

I used to have one and I honestly didn't think it was that quick. Apart from having a HKS supper dragger it was still standard and running standard boost BUT the engine is the same 3S-GTE (2.0ltr twin entry turbo) that you get in the Celica GT4 and the T3 turbo on them is very restricted but with a decat, freeflow exhaust and boost controller they can go well.

I think standard 0-60 is 5.9?

They don't run T3 turbos, they run Toyota's own CT20b. They run the same engine as the ST205 model GT-Four, the difference being the powerplant in the ST205 is chargecooled.

The older MR2 turbo isn't particularly quick (most '93's and older).

Odd you say that, I found the two to be near identical, just the way they deliver the power is slightly different, the older CT26 cars feel like they spool faster but don't have the top end, the CT20 ones are smoother and keep pulling.

There is ~20bhp difference between the two but actual performance figures are very close.

The later car is the better option, especially if you want to mess with the engine, but with the price of the earlier ones now I wouldn't discount it because it "isn't particularly quick".

Don't be too worried about being overtaken by one, there are lots of very quick examples around, a standard one would be similar to a TT, a modded one would put it to shame, just look at the TOTB results ;)

I've driven a number of both. A standard rev.2 on the 1/4 mile I managed a 14.5 second pass. A standard rev.3 on the 1/4 mile I managed a 13.4 second pass in. That's quite a difference to me! Both done at Crail in similar conditions.

By contrast, a standard Supra TT auto does a 13.8 second 1/4 mile pass at Crail (manuals slower as usual) - I've done that time in 2x different examples.

Also, I've seen numerous standard rev.3 turbos get strapped to a dyno and put out anywhere from 250 - 280bhp on the same dyno. The power claim by Toyota is very conservative, just as it is for the JDM Supra. (320bhp on this exact same dyno for numerous standard examples)

What about the TOTB results? I didn't see any MR2 Turbos running 11 sec passes without NOS on standard turbos, engine and fuelling ;)

Cheers,

Brian.

Would agree with that, REV3 is heavier than the earlier revisions.

Had a REV1 & 2 tubby in my time and loved them, fantastic wee cars :)

rev1 can be a bit of a handful on the twistys, always waiting for the arse end to come round on you, more fun IMO but the rev2 and 3 are a bit more civilised.

I had a rev2 GTS, dyno'd with a HKS exhaust at 244bhp, weighed 1230ish kg wet with fuel in the tank, but mine didn't have abs, tcs, only 2 speaker radio, magnesium wheels. It wouldn't have weighed 1300kg with me sat in it. A few choice mods had it keeping up with Griff 500's to 100mph.

  • 3 weeks later...

MR2 Rev 1/2 0-60 5.7 Sec top speed 148mph 1/4 Mile 14.4 (14.1 has been accomplished but by a pro)

MR2 Rev 3> 0-60 5.1 Sec Top Speed 154mph 1/4 Mile 14.0 (not sure what this has managed elsehwere)

Any MR2 running mid 13's aint standard. It won't have much done but it deffo aint standard (check the IMOC 1/4 mile times).

A full BPU MR2, healthy, will be running around 280bhp if its a Rev1/2 and a Rev3 will get to about 300bhp because of the larger injectors and higher boosting turbo.

Boost for a Rev1/2 shouldn't be over 1Bar for a stock CT26, Rev3's have the smaller CT20b which can run up to 1.2 iirc. The main difference between the cars stock is the fueling, higher boost level and the fact the CT20b will boost to the redline whereas the CT26 will start tailing off after 5.5k revs.

Times for full BPU cars are around 0-60 4.5 sec's and 1/4 mile times around low-mid 13's. I think the best for a Rev3 with just BPU is 13.1 Rev 1/2 will be slightly off that pace but not much.

I have seen a 400bhp Supra being beat on the 1/4 mile by a 300bhp Rev2.

Don't count them out off the line...... after 80 they are toast. Just make sure you aren't too far behind by then and you will be good to go.

I was sceptical too TBH.

I'm guessing the Supra driver was either average or not very good and the MR2 driver was either very good or average, if you get my meaning.

How many TRUE 300bhp MR2's did you take on :p

Up at crail i watched many a dog run the 1/4 mile. They were modded and running slower times than a standard one lol.
