RedSZ
There is no correct name as such. Currently carers and familiies are likely to use "person with a Learning Disability" although this is becoming increasingly replaced with "person with an Intellectual Disability". Over the last 30 years the terms, Mental Retardation, Mental Impairment and Mental Handicap have gradually fallen out of favour.
JamesG
I got told "retard" wasn't a very nice word this morning by one of my staff. We use it all the time at work... ...mind you, we write ECU software so maybe it doesn't count

Supragal
'learning difficulties' for people with dyslexia etc, 'learning disabilities' for autism etc. what about if their problems are due to a head injury?
Scoboblio
what about if their problems are due to a head injury? That'd depend on what their problems are I think..... but I don't suppose how it came about would make any difference.
ADL Mark
I think the current generic politically correct term is 'Differently Abled' as it covers most things and apparently isn't offensive in any way, and doesn't imply that they are less of a person because of their ability or disability. Supragal
That'd depend on what their problems are I think..... but I don't suppose how it came about would make any difference. I suppose. I always tend to think of mental disability expressions as meaning 'born with' for some reason, rather than incurred. I suppose a blind person is still blind whether they were born blind or not so its the same I guess. I think it's all such a load of tosh anyway. Like Dug (Doug?) says you never know when this will become personal....I'm betting that a lot of the "aren't I funny I can rip the piss out of disabled people" gang would quickly change their minds if a loved one suffered a severe stroke or had an accident that left them brain damaged. I'm not one of the politically correct gang, out of habit I call myself a retard under my breath if I do something stupid etc etc..... but that's entirely different to calling an adult with the mental age of a 4 year old a "fuckwit". Agreed, lets hope that anyone with such shallow comments never has a handicapped child, or even if their sons or daughters give birth to a handicapped child. I wonder if this would happen and you are looking after that child and some narrow minded twat calls your handicapped child/grandchild a fuckwit, I wonder how calm you would be. Guest Chumpalot
This may have been mentioned before, I just couldn't be bothered to read 5 pages of this thread. I believe 'Disabled person/s' is the term that should be used. Based on when I used to work for the Human Rights department here. 'Window lickers', 'tards' and 'spastics' are all perfectly acceptable also.

I don't think anyone here is actually suggesting they would call someone that, but in jest it's the same as taking the mickey for any reason. I still use the terms, so yes, people affected by it do.
