hogmaw
Depends on the handicap in question, but mentally handicapped is fine as a general rule. My nephew is severely autistic, you could say he's mentally handicapped but we prefer to just say he's autistic.
robin
Mentally handicapped is what I would have used but just wanted to check that was the current PC term. I've always been fond of the term "X-Men" but others dont seeem to share my opinion.

Pete
I think the correct term now is 'people with learning difficulties'... That's not specific enough really as this definition covers 90% of the population.
Scoboblio
I think the correct term now is 'people with learning difficulties'... 'learning difficulties' for people with dyslexia etc, 'learning disabilities' for autism etc.
Muffleman
My missus works for a charity looking after kids with spina bifida and hydracephalus, so I can tell you that they dont like the term handicapped - it implies cap in hand, ie begging cos you cant do anything else. Spastic is no good either. That said, I am laughing at Jake Anyway, they prefer to be called disabled, whether it's mental or physical My missus was taking three kids for a day out one day, and she took a wrong turn and immediately exclaimed 'Oh I'm such a spaz' They were okay with it though
garetheves
Differently gifted?? We will all go to hell. I used to work in a "Special" school, most of the kids had Cerebral palsy, its quiet an eye opener really. The term physically challenged was used a lot but again its not really descriptive enough, most Americans are Physically Challenged after all
