Whether it is true or not I think it is worth signing the petition as it shows the govt that not everyone agrees with the weird apparent sense of political correctness that pops up frequently.

Probably, soon, our athletes will be instructed not to try too hard as it might offend others if they are too competitive! After all we wil be the hosts; probably best not to win any medals ...........

bloody hell Jake.

Next time I want to post a topic here I'd better run it past the "mythbusters" as I wouldn't want to upset you.

Damn,... should have stuck with the porn tonight rather than coming on here.

Yeah, yeah. Let's cut to the chase shall we love?

Where did you get this info that the dear old Red Arrows had been "banned" from something?

BoobBangers4 is quite good BTW

Yeah probably. That'll probably happen. You're probably right.

Jesus Christ. Where do these people come from? See what you've started, Ed?

I can see you have a big chip on your shoulder with the RAF.
Not at all. It's people that start pointless petitions with whom I have an shoulder-chip interface. Especially the ones that propagate a lie in the first place.

Fail RAF selection did we Jake?
We? I don't know about you Ed but sadly having a triple digit IQ precluded me from applying.

Sign a petition against some action the government isn't taking? Surely not.

Reactionary papers like The Sun and the Daily Mail are always on the look-out for the worst excesses of 'political correctness'. It's their raison d'etreto stir up the "it's-PC-gone-mad-I-tell-you-this-country's-gone-down-the-pan" brigade. When they can't find anything real, they exaggerate, distort, or plain make it up.

Having said that, it's not an unreasonable proposal. The original ethos behind the modern olympic games was one of international co-operation. The only place a military unit should have there is guarding it.

Given that the UK is trying to restore its damaged reputation following the invasion of Iraq - and are currently perceived as the no. 2 imperial aggressor in the world as a result of that action - it might not be a bad idea to avoid showing our military skill at such an international venue.

It's hardly a show of military skill though is it! Given that the Arrows never actually see any combat. And BTW that to me is a totally british thing - THE 9 best pilots in the world, and we use them to show off!! :D

Sorry but that's brilliant.

Where's the problem?

The Government statement didn't say that the Arrows were or weren't banned from appearing. Just that it wasn't them making the decision.

They're perfectly correct in that it would be the "organising committee of London 2012" calling the shots in this instance.

So a petition to the Govt is a complete waste of time. Blame Seb Coe etc if anyone.

Yes, but then we've grown up with the Red Arrows, so we see them as a non-military team. But for others viewing them, it's just British military aircraft and perhaps seen as Britain flexing its ex-Imperial muscles again.

I don't think it's anything to do with patriotism. If it was somebody banning the Union Jack at the olympics, that would be different. But the debate (if there is one) is about whether it's appropriate to have military units on display. And one problem with it is that for for many countries, military displays of any sort are symbols of british interference elsewhere(e.g. Iraq).

Of course, one could say "stuff them if they don't understand", but then there's not much point in having a huge gathering of nations united in their love of sport and competition, or whatever it's supposed to be.

I daresay none of this will deter China from military displays in Beijing, but that's another issue.

A mate of mine responded to the 'Red Arrow Banned' news with this:

Sport is dead, it died, with religion years ago, people should get on and do something more constructive and productive.

England can’t play football but is the greatest country in the world at Sailing! no one wants to know that though, they just bring the fact that we won the world cup in 1966 out of their arse at every social function and tea break.

We ought to set up a ring and fight the rest of the world in it instead we’re good at that!
