Is it hard to see a Supra when you drive a Transit van???

Ok van drivers, this is one for you guys.

For the third time now I have been pushed off the road by a van overtaking a car infront of it. Twice by Transits and the other one was a VW I think.

All 3 times on dual carriage ways, I'll be directly along side the van with a car in front of me. When the vans decide to over take the cars in front of them.

Today I was boxed in (couldnt brake or accelerate safely) and had to go over the rumble strips and onto the dirty area before the armco barriers before the idiot of a driver realised I was there and beeping the f**k out of him. (I now want a new horn too because I've realised its a really girly beep)

Is it that we are low down and the mirrors on the vans have serious blind spots. Or are the drivers on these occasions just being complete knobs.

:(

The blind spots on a Transit aren't too bad because of the little convex mirror under the main mirror. When I had an Escort van they were bloody massive so I used to indicate well before I switched lane incase I was about to do something stupid and kill someone and it's something I still do in my Transit.

I had somone in a punto do this. I had no where to go and they ended up hitting my wing mirror before they realised.

I was on the horn as soon as they started to drift towards me. This is an uprated 136dB horn and it didnt make a difference. All you can do is stay aware and try to avoid being along side people.

the newer vans have a small mirror on the large mirror so you can see what is next to you

That's correct, but I dont rely on this in my van.

You should have a good idea what's coming up in the fast lane by looking in the mirror frequently and not just when you want to overtake.

I have a blind spot mirror in the connect which is better than a standard mirror but it still leaves a blind spot that makes it difficult to see bikes and smaller cars. I always do the life saver look in my van but my necks not quite long enough to reach the other side so its a pain alot of the time.

Am I the only person that looks over my shoulder before I overtake to check my blind spot?

I'm sure I was told to do this by my driving instructor?

Nope, I do this all the time, but then again I've been a biker for 15 years so it's a reflex action now. I have been known to do lifesavers whilst walking...

That's the one thing I miss about not being in a bike - if some fucktard drifts over trying to kill me, a gentle kick on the door soon puts 'em back in their own lane.

Drove 530 miles in a Luton van yesterday, and I was constantly checking my mirrors to be aware of traffic when I could see slow moving traffic ahead that I might need to overtake. Occasionally I'd have to check out the window to be 100% sure there was nobody sitting in my blind spot.

I don't think there's an excuse for not realising there's someone there in your blindspot. You should be aware of what's happening around you. I think a lot of people (not just van drivers) just focus on what's in front of them and that's it, which is dangerous.

However, the biker in me thinks that cars (even Supras!) shouldn't be sitting next to a van, where the driver might not be able to see you. Especially if you're too close to the car in front to be able to safely go past the van.

I always find it safer if there's traffic in front, rather than go right up close behind it, to put myself in a position than can be clearly seen by the traffic in the inside lanes - even if it means "losing" out on a few places every now and then!
