can you reset the fuel gauge?

Hi all, was messing around with the dash on the weekend, usual saturday morning tinkering as you do, thought i'd see if i could change the lights on the instrumnet panel to a different colour,,,,, any way to cut a long story short, I swore i had more than half a tank of petrol in the car before I started Fukin about, then when i screwed everything back togther it was on empty, it went up again once i switched the ignition on, but now its stays up, and i'm not confident that its even giving the correct reading,

I've disconnected the battery for 24hrs, but the needle didnt drop to E and go back up again it just sat there.

basically can i reset the gauge somehow, without having to run the tank empty:stupid:

cheers

Yeah I filled up quite a few times, but a journey the other day that nearly uses half a tank of petrol, only used a quarter, so it moves up and down fine, i'm just doubting its accuracy............ I just thought there must be way to reset it to zero and then it has to reclaibrate or take a new reading?

any more ideas pls

The reason the needle doesn't drop is because it works on resistance and requires a power source. This is why it only moves when you fill up the car and turn the ignition on.

Think of the fuel guage reading full when there is no resistance (the guage sees 12V. (Le's not get too technical here!!!))

When you use fuel the resistance increases and more voltage is dropped and so the guage sees less and hence drops.

However I suspect that if you've been fiddling you've knock the actual needle ( i know as I just did this last week :-( so have to do the same as you..........as follows).

The best thing to do is fill it up to the brim to make 100% sure that by the time you get home it's still 99.9% a full tank.

Then with the ignition on move the dial to the full position. (Not sure if just that alone will do it or if you have to take the needle off and replace in the correct position (I don't think you have to))

Haven't tried it yet but I'm sure thats all I did was to knock it, so it makes sense to just push it back (knowing it's full) . Currently it reads at about 2 O'clock when full so it's clearly out by quite a bit.

Good Luck

Pete
