Marty
So i've bought myself a few upgrade bits for my pc, so far ive bought... Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800, 2 gb Crucial Ram, 750w thermaltake psu, Antec 900 gamers case, I already have a half decent g'card (7950gtx 1gb) I need a decent motherboard, and a new hard disk. Any suggestions?? I was thinking of a Abit IP35 Pro for the motherboard ? Oh, i need a decent cpu cooler too
ShamelessTT
I always buy Abits, excellent quality and overclocking abilities. Im running one of the quad core supporting max range, but the IP35 looks an excelent choice. Zalman coolers are exceptional, i bought one recently made such a difference i was amazed! Also good choice on the case, i have one of these are there brilliant for space and cooling & the PSU is great too.
Daston
Asus are the kings of the MoBo indestry they overclock are reliable and always come with a shed load of goodies, also dont skimp on the price no point in buying a big shiny turbo install if your going to bung it in a Larda. I was thinking of using maybe water cooling, i read a review on a £50 water cooling system the other day, and it got a 5*, so tempted with that, cant remember the name though, will have to fish the mag out. The Abit got really good reviews in this months computer shopper (best buy), although i have been looking at the asus striker extreme, and the asus p5k delux wifi too. Im a bit baffled with everything to be honest, there's too much choice, am just looking for the best stuff for the money really. are you going to o/c or not? Im going to give it a bloody good go
8800
the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme is the best air cooler out there, and the Tuniq Tower is very good too
Marty
Ta I'll have a look and see what i can get them for. Would i be ok using an aircooled cooler on a overclocked duo extreme? I dont think i will be going too mad on the overclocking, especially since i dont know how to do it yet
8800
no probs, make sure u check the dimensions of the cooler so it fits in ur case. air cooling the x6800 wont be a problem just be careful with the vcore(i wont go over 1.5v on air personally). you can get 3.4-3.5Ghz on stock vcore and you should hit about 3.8 with air no problem 24/7 on 1.45v or less, have fun
carl0s
Whilst on this topic.. I could do with a motherboard recommendation as well. I want to use a PCI-e x8 SAS/SATA RAID controller, but I'm finding it hard to find a motherboard with a working x8 PCI-e slot. All the boards I have seen seem only to have PCI-e x16 for graphics (SLI also, but there's talk that these slots will only work for graphics cards). Has anybody got an SLI PCI-e motherboard and used the second PCI-e x16 slot for something other than a graphics card? Current thoughts are that I should just buy a cheap Dell server. edit: I just found this one.. but it's quite dear: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=572623 edit: and another: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=459994 None of the average price (~£40) boards have a usable PCI-e x8 slot though. Oh well at least they are available now anyway.
MrHanky
Im no expert, but went with the folowing board after asking a few people who did know: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-086-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=913 Takes DDR2 and DDR3 so you can upgrade at a future date if you want to.
