Bigger Garage door????

Hey guys

Any way of making my garage door wider without altering it structurally? I was thinking do rolling garage doors take up less room or am I pretty much stuck with what I have?

Problem I have is my doors are only 18cm wider than a Viper and I dont think that includes wing mirrors.

i know i was looking at this recently, but as my garage was in a block (on the end - bigger than the other garages) I actually found out i needed planning consent to do it - not planning permission as such, just someone needed to come and check out what i did to make sure that it was done properly, and didn't look out of place. It did mean getting a load of forms and paying a fee to do it.

Doesn't matter now anyway - I never did buy that house.

Anyway - assuming yours isn't in a block, there are a couple of types of door with respect to the location of the runners or frame. Some can mount from the inside, or some mount within the garage door opening - perhaps you could change to the first type, giving you maybe another inch or two??? Trying to find the website I had which explained this in diagrams which really helped me.

Otherwise it'd mean taking a row of bricks out I'd have thought?

I work for an architect. We tend to put up and over doors on Garages. You can have sliding doors but without taking bricks out you wont get much of an increase. The frames on garage doors are usually 70mm wide each. If you do increase the structural opening you'll be looking at a building reg application, and if very unlucky maybe even a planning application also (but unlikely).

I've just been looking at garage doors. You want a sectional or roller door - you get rid of the wooden frame the current door is on and the new one comes with a frame that mounts to the rear of the front brickwork inside the garage. So the door opening is the same width as the garage opening. Should save you 3 or so inches each side - the width of your existing frame. You need enough clearance each side inside the garage though.

The other advantage of them is that they are much more weatherproof and secure because the door sits in runners each side and extends right down to the floor. Plus you can automate them if you're a flash bastard. Not cheap though!

Vipers are less than 2" wider than my C5, which fits in my single garage ok - even with a central heating boiler. Bit tight mind, i've screwed wooden blocks into the floor in the corner so I know when to stop :)

When I looked at Vipers, I worked out one would have fit in my garage so you should be alright.

I have to have mine garaged between dawn and dusk, its a sub-clause on the insurance
